Repost from @marthaplimpton
Been thinking about Halyna Hutchins. How she was destined for greatness as a cinematographer. Her loss is a senseless and vicious tragedy that should never have happened. My heart goes out to her child, her husband, her family, and the wider family of filmmakers and @AFI members who knew and worked with her. This is not the first time this horror has happened, nor is it the first time a crew member's life was lost as a result of cutting corners. I find that reality appalling and outrageous.
It didn't used to be this way. I've been doing this for over 40 years, and I can tell you, it's gotten much, much worse and the result is much, much more dangerous.
What everyone on this film was pressed for, quite clearly, was time. The economics of #movie and #tv making have been so skewed, in a way by executives and #numberscrunchers , but mostly by #CULTURE . A CULTURE that increasingly believes that #stress , and #14hourdays , and fighting the clock, and #rushing , means saving #money . IT NEVER HAS AND NEVER WILL.
Turns out, as in every single industry on Earth, that culture kills people. It's no way to live.
All of this is to say, it is my personal belief that the members of @iatse should vote to #reject the latest contract offered, and send negotiators back to the table. It is my hope that the #AMPTP will take the union seriously and #respect the reality of what its members are saying, and have been saying, for years. No one person, or "class" of people, can change this. It's a culture that has to be rearranged and the ONLY way to rearrange it, in my view, is through the power, strength and voice of #UNION .
