Bluebells and warm sunshine from the first forest escapes of last Spring! 🍀☘️ - @ Lewesdon Forest, Dorset
Did you know, it's a feeling we all remember well, the first escape outside after lockdown, a strange feeling of uncertainty and rediscovery. Ours was not far from home, up to a favourite forest hillside we'd all come to know so well over the coming year. Space like Lewesdon, protected by the National Trust enabled us to explore outdoors again but did you know we owe it all, protection of our monuments, ideas of social housing, and medical charity to one woman, Octavia Hill!
Octavia grew up in the late 1800s in poverty and as such devoted her life to the welfare of the inhabitants of cities, especially the poor of London, South of the river. Building 5 small cottages in Southwark, Hill only allowed the poor to live there, charging them a fee for shelter and would visit each resident managing them and their lives personally. The scheme expanded to include more than 3,000 people forming the first housing management companies as we recognise them today. BUT Octavia was just getting started. She pushed hard for the poor to have access to the same posh gardens the rich enjoyed, demanding a "Green Belt" of land around the city as a garden for everyone. Encouraging the wealthy to give money to the poor she started one of the first national charities and, in saving historical monuments and spaces she was a founding member of the National Trust! Today, those first 5 houses can still be found in Red Cross Gardens in Southwark - Inspirational! Happy Monday everyone! ⭐
