*** Quick Facts! ***

Manufacturer: Atmel
Part Number: ATMEGA328P
-
I know, I know, this probably isn’t your favorite microcontroller anymore, especially with what's currently available on the market (STM32, ESP32, etc), but it’s definitely got a spot in my heart. The ATEMEGA328 has been used on a wide range of Arduino projects, making it a very well known part to a lot of people. The Arduino Nano was what I used for some of my first personal projects, and it's so easy to use that I find myself coming back to it over and over.

The ATMEGA328p is an 8-bit microcontroller implementing a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) architecture. Running at 16MHz it has a 16MIPS (Million Instructions per second) throughput, and can even run up to 20MHz if powered from a 5V source (and using an external oscillator). The 328P also includes 32KB of programmable flash memory for your programs

A few weeks ago I posted a reel showing the process I went through to extract the silicon from inside this part. Unfortunately, the silicon did not release cleanly from the epoxy, so I had to boil it in pine gum rosin. This process should be done outside, or under a fume hood, since the fumes generated from boiling pine gum rosin can be a respiratory hazard.
-
The rosin should be around 350-400C, and in my case this means setting my hot air to around 600C. At this temperature, it takes somewhere between 30 minutes to an hour for the epoxy to fully dissolve, depending on its composition and thickness. I probably could have left this silicon in for a few more minutes and it would have turned out a little cleaner.
