Moving On From Veterans
The Patriots released DL Lawrence Guy and DB Adrian Phillips on Monday. These moves came sort of randomly and probably caught a few people by surprise, but I think these are extremely logical steps in the right direction for this team. They obviously hurt a little bit, especially Guy, mostly because of how integral he was for the 2010s, but that’s what comes with the business.
PFF isn’t the greatest tool to evaluate players, but Lawrnece Guy saw a small dropoff this season with a 45.5 Grade down from a 53.5 in 2022. He was, however, still a major piece in the defensive line with a consistent 500 snaps per season since 2017, so replacing him will be important. New England has guys on the roster in Sam Roberts, Daniel Ekuale, and Jeremiah Pharms who could possibly help do that. I think there is also a possibility New England makes a run at one of these DLs hitting Free Agency in a loaded DL class. Christian Wilkins (obviously high end), Leki Fotu, and Tim Settle are some names I would look out for. Could also see a mid-late round draft pick there.
This one makes even more sense than Guy. Phillips had a 72.7 PFF Grade in 2022 but dropped down to a 46.5 in 2023. He played a mere 138 Defensive Snaps and played more than twice that number on Special Teams. He played 9 Defensive Snaps after the Bye, and Marte Mapu essentially completely replaced him on defense. A no brainer move at a position that probably doesn’t need to be addressed further this Offseason unless they fail to bring back Kyle Dugger.
Overall, to me, these are respect moves. Allowing proven veterans to get to FA earlier is a nice move from New England’s side and they should get picked up and have a role somewhere else. The youth movement in Foxborough keeps on moving.
Van Pelt was also asked what he looks for in a quarterback: "Smart, tough, and a leader."
When hired as the new head coach, Jerod Mayo had this to say about Mac Jones indirectly "The quarterback has to have some type of leadership ability, and hopefully, we can get to that point,"
Like I've said, people connect the dots. The biggest indictment anyone could ever say about someone is that they're not a leader. Macs gone.
