🍷❗️Have you recently tasted a 2003 bordeaux❓ This Grand-Puy-Lacoste is beautiful to drink now. . Captivating nose of dark fruits, baking spices, cigar box and forest floor, intense mouthfeel with smooth texture, ample volume and excellent concentration, multilayered flavours of black currant, blackberry, cherry, liquorice and hints of chocolate supported by a firm mineral backbone, ripe acidity and integrated tannins leading onto a long, appealing finish. There has always been lingering scepticism about the staying power of 2003 bordeaux given the extreme weather conditions during that vintage. Drinking beautifully well now, this has evolved into a delightful wine with fine balance and fascinating poise. It’s rich and intense without ever straying into jammy or heady, and there is still enough fruit freshness that makes it quite enjoyable. I have a soft spot for this estate which consistently punches above its weight by delivering, even in hot years like 2003, brilliant wines at great value 😊🍷 . Blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot and 2% cabernet franc from 38 year-old vines, on gravel, silt, sand and clay soil over limestone subsoil. . In the same lineage of connected families during 200 years since its creation in the 1730s, Grand-Puy-Lacoste was sold in 1932 to Raymond Dupin who had a monumental reputation for his hospitality but sadly neglected his estate in the 1960s and 1970s. When Jean-Eugène Borie of Ducru-Beaucaillou acquired the estate in 1978, the vineyard was just half of its original size and the château itself was in a poor state of disrepair. Under the aegis of François-Xavier Borie, Jean-Eugène’s son, massive renovation and modernisation works were quickly rolled out, just in time to produce an outstanding wine in 1982. Very nice 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗 from Elio Altare. Sour cherries and roses with a hint of licorice on the nose. Mid-weight, bright fresh fruit and forward leaning acidity. Quite polished and pleasant tannins. Well balanced, well structured. Perfect companion to pasta al ragù on a Tuesday evening in September. 🍇🥂❗️Do you enjoy tasting chenin blanc from the Loire Valley❓ This 2018 Clos de Mosny from Domaine de la Taille aux Loups is utterly delightful. . Perfumed nose of citrus, white stone fruits, wet rocks and floral scents, dense and grippy mouthfeel with ample volume, luscious texture and excellent concentration, succulent flavours of apricot, white peach, pear and hints of nutmeg liberally laced with faint mineral undertones, well integrated acidity and saline notes carrying through a long, precise finish. This is a delightful wine with impeccable balance, remarkable focus and understated complexity. I particularly love its mouthwatering tension, racy freshness and appealing purity. It’s beautiful to drink now and will further improve with a few more years 😊🥂 . Clos de Mosny is a 12ha south-facing monopole vineyard enclosed within 1.6km of walls, planted with 50 year-old chenin vines on sandy clay and flint soil over clay and limestone subsoil. Aged in oak barrels, 1/3 new, for 12 months. . Just across the River Loire from Vouvray, Montlouis, an appellation sandwiched between the River Cher and the Loire itself, has been taken out of the shadows of its more famous neighbour thanks to the relentless efforts of inspirational leaders like Jacky Blot. . Former wine broker Jacky Blot bought Domaine de la Taille aux Loups in 1989 in Montlouis. He made painstaking efforts to breathe new life into the appellation, though not without ruffling a few feathers in the local community with his approach to viticulture and winemaking. Organic viticulture, ploughing rather than using herbicides, no use of fertilisers and barrel fermentation were considered back then to be quite shocking, to say the least. Jacky eschews malolactic fermentation and elevage is carried out in wood barrels in order to get more complex flavours. Another day, another blind tasting. This time 2 grape varieties, Pinot Noir and Feteasca Neagra and 2 styles for each, fresh and aged for a few months in oak barriques. Feteasca Neagra, a Romanian native grape, probably most known Romanian grape, with the classic plum, grilled plum and other red and black fruits. It is usually heavy oaked but not in this case, here the oak is in the background and only the polished tannins and a bit of vanilla and spices made the difference between the oaked and fresh version. A bit of coffee also. A nice versus between fresh and aged. Nice balance in both wines, medium aftertaste and also a nice fruitiness in both of them. Pinot noir was also a nice surprise, the red fresh fruits in the front and some oaky notes in the background, some gravel and wet wood, with a very good balance and a nice aftertaste. A good exercise for getting the differences from ageing the wine just for a few months. It is their first year of making wine and the future looks good! If the quality is their focus they will have some amazing wines in the future! It was a good day with 4 out of 4 int his blind tasting. Er was eens een Italiaanse markies met een enorme voorliefde voor Bordeaux wijnen. Na de Tweede Wereld Oorlog waren alle handelskanalen met Frankrijk verbroken. Er zat maar één ding op: zelf wijn maken. De lokale bevolking dacht dat Mario gek was geworden. Franse druiven op Toscaanse bodem?! De grond waar Mario de druiven op aanplantte was niet zo maar een stukje grond. Maar een eeeeee-norm Landgoed genaamd Tenuta San Guido, wat zijn vrouw had georven. De ligging van de zee en de licht glooiende en stenige bodem deed Mario doen denken aan Bordeaux. Hij zag geen reden waarom de Franse druiven hier niet goed op zouden gedijen. Hij had gelijk. Jaaaaaarenlang genoten hij en zijn vrienden van de wijn. Critici en restaurateurs moest hier NIETS van weten. ‘Te licht. Onaantrekkelijk.’ Zelf kwam Mario er achter door wat kistjes van oudere jaargangen te bewaren, dat zijn wijn werkelijk waar fan-tas-tisch bleek te ouderen. 1978 is het jaar wat Sassicaia wereldberoemd heeft gemaakt. Een internationale proeverij van de cabernet sauvignon druif. Grote namen als Lafite, Mouton, Haut-Brion en alle andere beroemde cru’s deden mee. Mag jij raden wie er als grote winnaar naar voren kwam. ;-) De internationale pers dook er bovenop en de rest is È S T O R I A. 🍇 Sassicaia is het paradepaardje, maar ook wordt er andere mooie wijn gemaakt, zoals de 2019 Guidalberto - Toscana - Tenuta San Guido. PRACHTIG jaar, dijk van een wijn met een groot bewaar potentieel. Kan nog wel 15jaar mee! OH.
