📚 Language is the light of the mind 📕
Really enjoying rereading my mom’s memoirs. My mom has a command of the English language unequalled by anyone I have ever met in my life. Consequently, while growing up, my sisters and I had to think before we spoke and choose our words carefully.
My mom proofread every paper I ever wrote in high school and college and I still depend on her to proofread all the articles I write for Men’s EX online magazine.
Sadly, the English language seems to be in a state of decline. Most TV, cable and written journalism is rife with grammatical errors. Contrary to the old adage that English is a living language that is always evolving, I would argue that it is devolving as evidenced by its gross misuse in popular culture.
I am eternally grateful to my mom for instilling in me an appreciation for the eclectic, difficult but ultimately beautiful English language.
Her strict instruction has served me well.
