Re-sharing for #pcosawarenessmonth , let’s keep the conversation going!
Have you experienced any of these symptoms?!
* Excessive body and facial hair
* Hair loss
* Irregular menstrual cycles
* Mood changes
I HAVE 🥺😭🙋♀️
👉🏼Well if you have, firstly don’t worry you are not alone. In fact many women with elevated androgens will experience symptoms like this!! And secondly- although it takes time, patience and commitment, it is possible to reverse!🙌 (take it from someone who has!)
If you have PCOS it is likely you have heard about androgens before (particularly testosterone), and that’s because having elevated levels of androgens is one of the three defining signs of polycystic ovarian syndrome.
You must have two out of the following three to be diagnosed with PCOS: -Irregular or absent menstrual cycles
-polycystic ovaries (as seen on an ultrasound)
- or evidence of hyperandrogenism.
There are two ‘classifications’ of hyperandrogenism:
🧑🏽⚕️Clinical hyperandrogenism: is when there are visible signs or symptoms that indicate that androgen production may be higher than expected. These are things like acne, hair loss and hirsutism
🩸 Biochemical hyperandrogenism: is when your blood test shows abnormally high levels of androgen hormones in the bloodstream.
Either of these classifications can be used in a PCOS diagnosis.
🚨 HOWEVER please keep in mind when it comes to biochemical hyperandrogenism results are based on what GPs consider to be in the ‘normal’ range.
I personally think it is important to note that ‘normal’ does not always mean ‘optimal’, SO if you are experiencing symptoms it might be worth getting a second opinion or having your results read by an alternative health practitioner to interpret.
👉🏼Have you experienced symptoms of high androgens??
