Feeling and processing our feelings is truly a skill.
When we've experienced trauma, childhood emotional neglect, and environments where the expression of our feelings was not welcomed: we start to experience a threat around emotions.
The truth is that emotions are totally normal and neutral. There are no negative or positive ones. Emotions simply carry information.
I might sound all smart now, but trust me, feeling can still be really threatening to me. I've experienced the release and empowerment that comes with expressing feelings, along with others.
Here are some tips on expressing your emotions when it feels really scary and threatening:
✨ realize the importance of it. If you've been told over and over that it's not legit to feel, there is so much baggage in you against it! So read up about it. Discover how much it is part of the normal human experience.
✨ do it in little bits, not all at once. Sit with yourself, put on some sad music (I swear it helps so much!) and feel your chest, your belly. Notice the sadness coming up, and allow it to be there for just a moment, not too long. Over time, you'll be able to be with it longer.
✨ move through the emotion. A practice I've really been loving is putting on moving music, and just lightly and carefully moving my body the way it wants to be moved. Then pausing, noticing what's present, and moving some more. It's so powerful!
We will be doing many beautiful practices for emotional release and connecting back to the body in Alive & Aligned. This is an intimae 6 person, 6 week somatic group coaching program. We start beginning of January! Apply at the link in my bio.
