i have so many Thoughts TM.
i really appreciate that theyre canto!! and that the family temple is the oldest in toronto, which implies multiple generations of living in the city (at least in my mind). i think its nice to acknowledge that a lot of the more historically well-established chinese communities in the west are cantonese speaking.

people have been hating on ming saying shes stupid for not learning from her own experience with her mother, and that now shes doing the exact same harm to mei.
this take is .
objectively lacking in nuance.
grandma is critical of ming. we see this in "how could *you* let this happen," "like how *you* handled meimei in the news?" ming thinks the imperfect things in the world are her own fault.
contrast this with the fact that never once does ming actually blame mei for *anything* in this film. she blames devon, miriam, 4 town: "its *them* i dont trust". literally anyone but mei.
its a case of "i wont mess up like my parents did", which proceeds to create a whole new kind of messed up.
both struggle with the same underlying issue of needing to be perfect for the sake of others, but its also fundamentally different, because while ming strove for perfection to avoid criticism, mei strives for it so as to not disappoint. both mothers, of course, put undue stress on their daughters. and so i can understand the surface level similarity, but the standard takes are starting to annoy me.
