Okay okay, introducing the cast for my thesis, as I just realized I never posted anything about them! 🌟
For thesis, I created a short scrollable webcomic called ‘Hiraeth’..which I should *hopefully* be releasing to patreon and later webtoon (life is chaotic rn). Vega and Ansel are the main protagonists in this tale, closely followed by Eleine and Mona. Each of their names represents their role within the overarching story; Vega (brightest star within the northern constellation Lyra), Ansel & Eleine (protectors), and Mona (an unachievable wish).
Both escapism and historic tales play a large role in my artistic practice, and thus, I wound up researching various pieces of mythology, and found myself drawn to those involving the stars. The folktales that stuck out to me the most were: The Moon Maiden, and Pleiades. Inspired by these tales, I wrote an entirely new mythology surrounding the stars loosely influenced by events within both mythologies; I wanted to create something new and intriguing, yet informed by historical tales/ storytelling, thus ‘He-rye-th’ blossomed into existence. This tale takes place in the Scottish lowlands in the 18th century, and is focused around a lower-class middle aged couple who had always dreamt of having a child, yet weren’t able to. They had a tradition of wishing upon the stars, and one night, after the main protagonist departs his extremely laborious job at a lumber mill to head home, he witnesses a brilliant meteor shower. He casts his wish upon these shooting stars, and but a mere moment after, a deafening explosion rings out. He tracks down where this bizarre explosion originated from, and there, in the snow, lies a mysterious sleeping child, completely unbaffled from the strange event that just occurred. This child grants the Adler family their one and only desire; yet, not all is as perfect as it seems. This child is not simply a child.
