Did you know that certain circumstances can release hormones that can cause your labour to stall? ⁣ These are hormones that are responsible for our built in fight-or-flight response. ⁣ ⁣ The hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline are part of the group of hormones known as catecholamines (CAs) and together they stimulate the sympathetic nervous system for fight or flight.⁣ ⁣ They are produced by your body in response to stressors such as: ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 😱 Fear ⁣ 🍔 Hunger/dehydration 💡Bright and noisy environment 🤕 Pain 💢 Too many people interfering 🥶 Cold temperatures ⁣ During labour, your CA levels slowly and gradually rise, peaking around transition (around 7-10cm), which explains the overwhelming and panicked feeling experienced during transition. ⁣this can sometimes result in a little respite from contractions as we approach second stage. ⁣ But high adrenaline levels in early labour, which reflect activation of the woman's fight-or-flight system in response to her perception of fear have been shown to interfere with contractions. ⁣ ⁣ This interference can slow or even stop labour. Noradrenaline also acts to reduce blood flow to the uterus and placenta and therefore to the baby.⁣ ⁣ So this is why protecting your birth environment is so important. A quiet, dimly lit room, with minimal interruption and interference is crucial to avoiding the CAs being released at the wrong time and impacting your birth experience! Are expectations getting in the way of connecting with baby? . Have you heard stories of the connection other women have cultivated with their babies while pregnant? The dreams, the insights, the movements in response to touch or sound? . Have you been wondering why you haven’t had anything like that and are struggling with what that means? . There is so much potential in connecting with bub but we can sometimes expect it to look a certain way and miss what is available to you and your baby. . Sometimes the pressure to feel a certain thing is enough to cloud and block any intuitive, emotional or physical connection with baby. . Could you clear any expectation or preconceived idea about what connecting with baby might look and feel like and just sit with the intention to spend some time with yourself and baby and see what arises? . I have found this practice of just being with baby so powerful. Releasing fear and expectations and instead surrendering to the beauty of this journey we are on together. Sometimes I feel so connected to baby, other times I feel so intimately connected to myself without such a strong awareness of baby and other times it’s just stillness. .
