“My work inherently celebrates and uplifts, offering visual candy that serves as something sweet and delectable for the mind’s eye to indulge in.” —@animalhomosexuality (Wayne Bruce aka Ducky) ⁣ ⁣ “When considering my aesthetic, I like to think of it as ‘cartoon in real life,’” says the self-taught multidisciplinary artist and, more recently, novice toy-maker. “One striking quality of my characters is their immediate and welcoming presence, which mystifies their true intentions. I enjoy toying with the sinister flip side that cuteness can conceal, adding a layer of intrigue to the otherwise adorable and endearing nature of my creations. ⁣ ⁣ I have no fear of experimenting with entirely new mediums, even if I have little to no prior knowledge about them. Embracing the pursuit of the unknown is essential to me. My desire to physically connect with my characters motivated me to try ceramics.” ⁣ ⁣ Following a move to NYC where ceramics became less accessible, Ducky adapted from clay to polymer as an artistic medium. “Since shifting my focus, my characters have undergone a transformation. They have become more talkative, expressive and vibrant, bursting with colors and textures that make them feel alive. Despite their outwardly inhuman appearance, at the heart of these creations lies the complexity of human nature.” ⁣ ⁣ Art by @animalhomosexuality

“We can’t respect our Earth without respecting each other, and we can’t respect each other without respecting our Earth. They are interconnected.” —Essayist and eco-feminist @kwolanne (Kwolanne Felix) ⁣ ⁣ “I’m motivated by the resilience and beauty of my community, culture and the places we call home. So much of my culture lies in the ecology of the Caribbean, and other coastal regions. Those places and people are now under significant threat, so I hope to save as much as I can by pushing for effective climate policies,” says Kwolanne, who was born in Haiti and grew up in Miami. ⁣ ⁣ Kwolanne is a writing fellow for @truthout and a Public Voices Fellow for @theopedproject . She spoke at the United Nations headquarters this year and at COP27, where she discussed Black women’s experiences with reproductive health and the climate crisis. ⁣ ⁣ “My work focuses on gender-responsive climate policies. As countries build out their frameworks towards mitigation and adaptation, my goal is to assure they’re considering gender and intersectional experiences. ⁣ ⁣ We have the power of seeing a beautiful vision of what the world can be, and the audacity to demand it. Young people are at the forefront of climate advocacy because we know the world can be better, and we are dedicated to making that a reality.” ⁣ ⁣ Photo by @kwolanne

New York-based painter @moderndayconfucius (Leon Xu) creates works that revolve around ideas of memory, familiarity and déjà vu. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “You know that feeling of walking down the same street every day, a scene you’re so familiar with, and one day you find something you’ve never noticed before? That’s the moment I’m trying to capture, and that’s why I enjoy focusing on little things that are easily forgotten,” says Leon.⁣ ⁣ “I’m not seeking to define that moment, but simply to be with it. These reflections are offered at different scales, and my goal is to make the small paintings feel big, and the big paintings feel immersive. I like the idea of a painting absorbing you in the way a film may absorb you and transport you to another world.⁣ ⁣ I enjoy exploring the contrast in emotions that you can feel from one memory. By capturing moments or placing memories onto canvas, sometimes I feel like I’m altering the ‘reality.’” ⁣⁣ ⁣ Photo of @moderndayconfucius by @thedomsolo Art by @moderndayconfucius

“I want people to feel like they’ve stepped into a whole new world of my making.” ⁣ ⁣ Multimedia artist @christianmingle93 (Chris Lloyd) makes work that is both expansive and interactive. “The things I create all focus on one thing, and that is symbology. I try to build narratives using symbols that are common to everyone to explore themes like religion, ideology, nature, self-exploration and time,” says Chris, who picked up his first watercolor set during the pandemic. ⁣ ⁣ “I primarily use watercolor but experiment with a lot of digital process and machines, using things like laser cutters, vinyl cutters, transfers and cyanotype. I try to have as many little micro interactions in my painting as possible to give the viewer something new to discover at every glance. I often make my work 3D or hang it more intricately than just as a flat piece on the wall so users can engage with the piece a little more interactively. ⁣ ⁣ Because I make work that is so personal to me it means that it is ever changing and ever growing, which I think is the most beautiful part of my practice.” ⁣ ⁣ Photos by @christianmingle93
