“My grandson's my little mate. We do everything together – but if it wasn’t for research, I might not have got to see him at all.” 👇 ⁣ ⁣ Tommy was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2012. He took part in the TUXEDO trial, which we funded: “I decided I’d do it in about 10 seconds. In April 2013, the doctor told me the cancer had gone – I was over the moon.” ⁣ ⁣ He says, “I’m so grateful for that trial. I truly believe that’s what allowed me to see my grandson grow up. Without research, I wouldn’t have had moments like these with him.” ⁣ ⁣ More research means #MoreMoments like this. What’s the one moment you might not have shared with a loved one, if cancer had had its way? Add a photo of your moment to our photo wall – tap the link in our bio, or head to cruk.org/MoreMoments

We’d like you to meet Jolene, she was 25 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Here's her story 👇 Jolene was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in February 2016 after a miscarriage revealed cysts on her ovaries. “Sadly, I have to be kind of thankful that I fell pregnant and lost the baby, as if I hadn’t, I wouldn't have known about the cancer until it was too late. At the time I was told I’d need a full hysterectomy, but luckily, after being referred to a specialist I was able to keep my womb. My husband, Ashley, and I started enquiring about IVF in 2017 and had our implantation. We’re incredibly happy to say we welcomed Ashlene on 11 June 2020!” We’re delighted to share that since this update, Ashlene has since become a big sister as Jolene welcomed a baby boy to the family in October 2023. Huge congratulations for the birth of baby Joley 💙 #OvarianCancerAwarenessMonth #OvarianCancer #CancerStory Photo credit: @ben_chapman_photos

Catherine and her family raised over £10,000 in the Big Hike Challenge last year after her husband, Adrian, died of bowel cancer in 2022. Catherine said, "Adrian struggled on and off with tummy troubles over the years so we didn't think anything of it at first. But when the symptoms didn’t improve, he went to the doctor. After several tests, Adrian was given the devastating news that he had stage four bowel cancer which spread to his liver. Taking part in Big Hike is something I'll never forget. Just to be out in breath-taking countryside surrounded by everyone who loved Adrian was incredible. It was the best way of honouring him and to help do our bit to help fund life-saving research, so one day other families won’t have to lose their loved ones to this horrible disease like I did.” Thank you Catherine for sharing your story and for taking part in our #BigHike Challenge 💓

Geoff has been cancer free since 2015 after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011. He's sharing his story to help us raise awareness for #ProstateCancerAwarenessMonth 👇 “My father died of prostate cancer in 1991, but the first indication I had of any symptoms was in 2011, when I had problems with my water. The doctor gave me antibiotics for a suspected water infection, however I went back to the surgery after the tablets didn't make a difference. I was then given a rectal exam and many biopsies, which confirmed that I had prostate cancer. I was given 37 sessions of radiotherapy and thankfully I'm now doing well. It's very important to get the message across about the need for early diagnosis to a male population. Society’s view that men should not discuss intimate subjects is outdated, and many feel rectal examinations are embarrassing. But early detection is vital and it's five minutes which could save your life." It's important to know what's normal for you and to let your doctor know if you notice anything unusual for your body. #ProstateCancer #CancerStory

How to sort fact from fiction 🔍 The internet is filled with many conflicting claims about health and cancer. So it’s hard to know whether we’re trusting the right information. Here's five tips you can use to help identify misinformation online: ✅ Can you trust the source? In the same way you wouldn’t trust the content of an email sent from a suspicious email address you didn’t recognise, you also shouldn’t trust health information that comes from a suspicious source. Consider if the outlet or account sharing the health information has the credentials and expertise to back it up. ✅ Credibility of the research All good journalists should report information based on quality sources. That’s vital for articles on science, health and cancer. To help you work out if research is credible, ask questions such as: Has it been published in a respected journal? Who was it funded by? Does the conclusion truly reflect the results? ✅ Does it contradict existing research? New research continually adds to our understanding of a topic. It’s extremely rare that just one study will completely change scientific consensus. If a headline is contradicting a lot of existing high-quality research, it can be a good indicator that you might need to delve deeper to investigate the claims. ✅ Does it use shocking or provoking language to hide misinformation? Emotional language can be more persuasive, drawing us into believing something that’s not necessarily true. So, take a moment to step back. Try to look past content that makes bold, provoking statements but doesn’t have the scientific evidence to back it up. ✅Cross check with reliable sources of information One of the easiest and best ways to check whether something you’ve read is fact or fiction is to use well-recognised accurate and reliable sources of health information. These can be websites like nhs.uk or our very own cruk.org. Tap the link in our bio to read the full article 🔗

Mo has been living with a brain tumour for over seven years after being given a prognosis of two years. This #BrainTumourAwarenessMonth , she is sharing her story to help raise awareness 👇 “It was mid-Jan 2016 and I started to get pins and needles throughout my body. After driving to work one day I got out of my car and collapsed on the floor. My dad rushed me to hospital to get a scan on my brain which showed I had a tumour the size of a golf ball. I had steroids and an eight-hour operation in which 50% of the tumour was removed, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Today, my tumour is dormant but I'm sharing my journey to help others. I remain positive as I want to be here and this is me saying thank you for all the treatments that have kept me going since my diagnosis. My advice to others would be, if you notice something unusual for you and your body, please get seen as soon as possible. It could just save your life." Thank you Mo for sharing your story 💓 For more information on signs and symptoms of brain cancer, visit our website. #BrainTumourAwarenessMonth #BrainTumourSymptoms
