& @diokaminaris present the ORIGINAL SHOT of March 27, 2024 🌸 SPRING IN ATHENS 🌸 Many consider spring to be the best time of year to visit Athens. From early March, poppies and daisies bloom all around our neighbourhoods and ancient monuments (a signal that the jasmine and bougainvillea flowers won’t be far behind). The warm, sunny weather is perfect for sightseeing. There are fewer crowds to share those world-famous attractions with, and you’ll have the beautiful, blue-sky beaches of the Athens Riviera mostly to yourself. In March and April, you can experience the spirited celebrations of carnival and Greek Easter. In May, the city’s festival season kicks off with a bang. & @diokaminaris present the IGER OF THE DAY of March 27, 2024 🌺 ISLAND’S BREEZE IN ATHENS 🌺 Anafiotika is a scenic tiny neighborhood of the center of Athens, part of the old historical neighborhood called Plaka. It lies on the northeast side of the Acropolis hill. The first houses were built in the era of Otto of Greece, when workers from the island of Anafi came to Athens in order to work as construction workers in the refurbishment of King Othon’s Palace. The first two inhabitants were listed as G. Damigos, carpenter, and M. Sigalas, construction worker. Soon, workers from other Cycladic islands also started to arrive there, to work as carpenters or even stone and marble workers, in a further building reconstruction period in Athens, but also in the following era after the end of the reign of King Otto. & @diokaminaris present the IGER OF THE DAY of March 26, 2023 🏛️ POSEIDON, THE GOD OF THE SEA 🏛️ At the end of the Sounio Peninsula at the southernmost point of Attica, lies the Temple of Poseidon within a fort that protects the coast of Attica. Made entirely of white marble, it was erected in the middle of the 5th century BC and built to honour Poseidon, god of the sea. This Doric temple was erected during the Golden Age of Pericles. Along with the Parthenon and the temple of Aphaia, on nearby Aegina island, Poseidon’s mighty monument completes the Sacred Triangle of antiquity. & @diokaminaris present the ORIGINAL SHOT (VIDEO) of March 24, 2024 🧿 AESTHETIC OF AN ISLAND 🧿 “The ease of a beautiful Cycladic morning and the familiar sounds of the sea Sifnos, one of my favorites of the Cyclades, offers a quiet retreat away from the crowds of neighboring islands. A harmonious blend of sun-washed villages, blue-domed churches, and olive groves, all set against the backdrop of the sparkling Aegean. Picture wandering through Apollonia, every alley a perfect snapshot, or a post-beach sunset at Kastro, built on a high cliff overlooking the sea with serene panoramic views. & @diokaminaris present the IGER OF THE DAY of March 24, 2024 💙 ASTYPALEA’S BEACHES 💙 Although the beautiful Chora with the crown castle of the Venetian family Querini steals the impressions, most of the beaches in Astypalea have clean waters and they are much quieter than beaches in other islands. Some Astypalea beaches are easy to access while you need to take the bus to go to some others, which are secluded and frequented by naturists. Most of the main roads leads to the beaches they are dirt and need attention with the car. The most popular Astypalea beaches are Pera Gialos, Agios Konstantinos, and Livadia (close to Chora) and Vatses and Kaminakia, with some driving adventure to get there. & @diokaminaris present the ORIGINAL SHOT (VIDEO) of March 23, 2024 🕊️ The liberation of Kalamata (March 23, 1821) was one of the first episodes of the Revolution of 1821. After a ruse by the Greek revolutionaries, the Turks surrendered the city to them without offering any resistance. Petrobeis Mavromichalis during the uprising in Messinia. From the afternoon of March 22 until the dawn of the following day, 2,000 armed men of “Western Sparta” took up positions on the heights around Kalamata. On March 23, Dimitrios Papatsonis arrived in Kalamata with a body of more than a thousand Messinian fighters, including the great commanders Mitros Petrovas and Panagiotis Kefalas, where he joined the Maniates of Petrobeis Mavromichalis and the bodies of Papaflessas, Anagnostaras and Nikitaras , completing the blockade of the city. Then only the commander Arnautoglu understood the trap but, blocked as he was, he could no longer escape to Tripolitsa (note Tripoli). He then decided to gather the Turks in the houses of the city that offered themselves for defense. At noon, 24 priests and hieromonks, after a moving eulogy, blessed the Greek flags and swore the revolutionaries. This ceremony took place on the banks of Nedona, in a festive atmosphere, while the bells and the triumphant shouts of the Greeks could be heard. There, near the Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles (according to the prevailing opinion), 24 priests and hieromonks gathered (Metropolitan Chrysanthos Pagonis was a prisoner in Tripolitsa) wearing priestly vestments and holy icons, blessed the revolutionary flags and sent prayers in favor of the struggle . Petrobeis, took an oath that he will fight until the end for the freedom of the homeland. All the warriors also swore, raising their hands. & @diokaminaris present the IGER OF THE DAY (VIDEO) of March 23, 2024 ⚓️ ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES OF CYCLADES Naoussa, the second largest village, with the largest fishing fleet in the Cyclades, on the north coast of Paros island, retains the beauty of Venetian architecture. Naoussa was formed around the port of the same name during the Byzantine period. It was fortified with a wall which ended in a Venetian bastion (Kastelli) parts of which are still preserved today and are places of great historical and archaeological interest. Today its beautiful and protected port is always flooded with fishing boats and fishermen who catch fresh fish and seafood. Naoussa is one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Greece, having maintained its authentic island character and its cosmopolitan glamor. Today the old fishermen’s warehouses have been turned into taverns, cafes and ouzo bars that serve fresh seafood delicacies. The cafes and bars make sense at night where people come from all over the island to have fun until the morning. & @diokaminaris present the IGER OF THE DAY (VIDEO) of March 22, 2024 🤎 ICONIC 🤎 Corfu Town sits on a small peninsula about halfway down the east coast of the island, a site chosen for its natural port and the two peaks that lend themselves to fortress-building. The small medieval town that grew up during Angevin rule (1267-1368) was enclosed by thick defensive walls and guarded by two imposing castles that looked out to sea and the Greek mainland. But it was under the Venetians, who stayed for some 400 years (from 1386-1797) that Corfu Town really prospered. The Venetians brought not only their great commercial know-how but also their architectural prowess and soon Corfu Town became a thriving economic center with northern-Adriatic flair and impregnable defenses (they significantly updated the Old Fortress and built the New Fortress). The Ottoman Turks laid siege to the town on numerous occasions over the centuries, but always in vain. Space inside the city walls was limited and so the streets were narrow and labyrinthine, much as they remain today. Not a great many Venetian buildings survive, but the two fortresses, the Liston promenade-piazza, the Spianada park, the Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo (once a theater but now Corfu City Hall), several palazzi, the canal separating the Old Fortress from the town and the occasional depiction of the winged lion, symbol of St Mark and Venice, all bear witness to the extended presence of the great maritime power. & @diokaminaris present the IGER OF THE DAY (VIDEO) of March 21, 2024 🤎 CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE 🤎 The pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, where the oracle of Apollo spoke, was the site of the omphalos, the ‘navel of the world’. Blending harmoniously with the superb landscape and charged with sacred meaning, Delphi in the 6th century B.C. was indeed the religious centre and symbol of unity of the ancient Greek world. & @diokaminaris present the PHOTO OF THE DAY of March 20, 2024 ❤️ SHAPE OF A HEART ❤️ The citizens of Veria woke up to a wonderful sight on Clean Monday. While others came out to fly kites, the Tourist Club «raised» two balloons and even one in the shape of a heart! The hot air balloons that graced the sky of Veria and traveled above the blossoming peach trees today were two: one white and one heart-shaped. According to information from veriotis.gr, this is an initiative of the Tourist Group that was crowned with great success and social media was filled with beautiful images from the enchanting plain of Veria. From sunrise and for a few hours the balloons flew over the flowery plain. A huge flying red heart flies above the pink flowers! At noon, a hot air balloon «flew» near the artificial lake of Aliakmonas. Many people took their cameras, found the right location on the plain or on the highest points of the city and clicked the unique sight.
