It’s time to begin unveiling the Illumination Mystery Box Art Challenge’s results. Starting tomorrow, we hope you’ll tune in to witness the sheer breadth of imagination in this creative community.
In this little introductory series of videos, we detail what each mystery box contained: just so that you can get an idea of what challengers received in the mail. We talk about the voting process that will unfold at the end as well.
For the next two weeks, you’ll see a an entry per day: each one represents a heck of a lot of work from its inception, to its execution, to its reveal on insta.
As each artist’s work is being featured, we might contact you with a wee lil request. Don’t worry, you’ll be great 😉 The next two weeks will be a special time, and we can’t wait to show you why.

I’m so proud to share @pearlandbee.handmade ’s illumination mystery box with you all. If you tuned into our lives, you got to learn quite a lot about Nicole Poirier. You’ll have learned that there’s lot that lurks behind her quiet demeanour, you’ll have met the whole Poirier klan, and you’ll have probably sensed the conscientiousness that Nicole brings to everything she does.
What I think I learned most fully from watching @pearlandbee.handmade ’s piece come together is that storytelling can involve the staging of dramatic irony and be quite performative and funny (see Nicole’s Aquatic Mystery Box entry for a keen example). But good storytelling can also be quiet. It can be staged to make the most meaning for the people closest to you; it doesn’t always need to be so outward reaching. The question of who we create for when we create is an interesting one, isn’t it?
Nicole made this piece to commemorate a trip to Hawaii in which her family took shape, and now it lives above her family’s table.
I’m struck by the act of making something that honours your family’s point of origin by extending sunshine through the darkness.

We’re mystery boxing into the weekend with @iplantman ’s entry into the Illumination Challenge.
You know what’s not at all a challenge? To highlight totally different interpretations of a light! What’s still remarkable (to me, anyway) is that these pieces could be reordered in any way whatsoever, and there would still not be two that even looked remotely similar. That’s kind of amazing, no?

For anyone wondering if Etsy is a viable platform to build a small business on, here’s some first hand information about how Etsy Inc. handles the sorts of “technical malfunctions” that can completely tank their small businesses (80-90% of which are women-owned and operated from home).
