Written here is a behind the scenes breakdown of how we designed the front elevation of our 'Foo' house. It consists of three primary materials, boardformed concrete, steel, and stucco, chosen for their ability to handle the intense desert sun. Then we used these simple materials in 3 ways, boardformed concrete for the front plane and first story to anchor the structure and add texture to the transition between building and landscape, white stucco set back as the 2nd plane carries up to the 2nd story to provide depth and contrast, and steel used for window shading provides  horizontal and vertical datums to highlight the dynamic form of desert plants. All of these elements were then asymmetrically composed and pushed forward and backward to allow the sun to modify them throughout the day and year with shadow and changing color. The recessed entry at our 'O-asis' new build wasn't designed to grab your attention or give much away about what you are about to discover beyond it. Instead, the niche is meant to be refined, clad in ipe that runs across the front door blending it in with the wall, setting the tone as the threshold into a space that quiets the noise of the outside world and allows you to focus within and on the simple pleasures of communing with nature. “We believe strongly in togetherness and the breaking of bread with our friends and family. We wish for lots of natural light, open space, and connection with the outdoors.” This was the response by our clients of our ‘Hive’ new build to a question we ask all of our potential clients. These beliefs and goals informed almost all the design decisions that come with designing a new home. This photo captures the vaulted main living space, anchored by the poured in place concrete fireplace. Glass doors pocket into the fireplace for a seamless connection to the covered outdoor patio and pool beyond the citrus trees and blur the lines of indoors and outdoors. Below is the text from our 1st post of our ‘White Dates’ new build. In it we reference ‘White Gates’, an iconic house by Al Beadle that now unfortunately faces demolition as a demo permit was recently pulled by the new homeowner. The Historic Preservation Commission will meet April 15, and may vote to initiate historic designation, but even if the city gives the property historic designation, it only would halt demolition for one year. We hope that the new homeowner will work with the city, Historic Preservation, and community to save the home so we don’t lose this critical part of our history in Phoenix, and in the architecture world at large. “When we first drove up to our new project site in the fall of 2018 we spotted perhaps the most iconic midcentury home in Phoenix across the street, a house designed by Al Beadle commonly known as “White Gates”. Knowing the history of this home, we knew immediately that we had the challenging task of creating a new neighbor that should honor the legacy of the midcentury modern icon while adding a distinctly new chapter to the story of this unique neighborhood. We named this new house “White Dates,” a play on White Gates inspired by the Date palm trees found on the site, including one that is used to mark the entry of the home.” Architect - @theranchmineofficial Builder - @minnewaskaphx Photographer - @danryan.studio Furnishings - @urbanrevivalphx

The entry at our ‘Mockingbird” new build was designed to subtly alter your state primarily using 2 techniques. The recessed, not overly large entry creates a compressive feeling that removes the suburban environment behind and dramatizes your entrance into a desert oasis. The use of natural stone and particularly wood has been shown to reduce stress and blood pressure, so we used it to create a calming feeling before setting foot into your home.  Architect - @theranchmineofficial Developer - @aspendevco Builder - @boxwell_homes Photographer - @danryan.studio

As the sun drops below the desert mountains the outdoor living at our ‘Mockingbird’ new build comes to life. The outdoor area is designed to function year round as the seasons change, from cooling off in the pool and seeking shelter under the covered living space in the summer to elements such as the sunken fire pit and star gazing aperture in the roof in the winter. A glass hallway connects the two wings of our 'Mockingbird' new build creating a private interior courtyard. The vertical fins act like a sundial during the day as you walk through the hall, anchoring you in this moment in time, and become a playful pattern at night. Pocketing glass doors on both sides of the living space turning your indoor living into an outdoor room while facilitating comforting cross breezes.
