We are huge Mindclash fans, owning every game up to date, and every new game is an insta-buy (or back) for us. This was the case too with Astra! They deviate a bit from the path of long, heavy games with this one being more on entry/gateway level and playable in 20 minutes.
We played Astra a couple of times with 2 players and I am a bit sad to say that this is the first MC we have mixed feelings about. I do feel that a huge part of this is because 2p is not the ideal player count. I see it shine with 3 players and am excited to try that out.
Astra is about discovering constellations by crossing out the stars on the (beautiful) cards. The one that crosses the last star, can keep the card. These give you great abilities and extra bonuses. The player that doesn’t win the card, can also get a bonus if they discovered a star in this constellation. This is simply said, there is a bit more to it in reality. In 2p, a bot player takes an extra turn when one of the players rests, crossing out a number of stars depending and potentially taking the card. The starting turns in 2p are all about dividing the markings as much as possible around the different cards, because you don’t want the opponent to acquire a very good card. But he does the same, so you’re not getting anything either. The bot then discards those cards… In this way the game takes a while to start rolling, because if no one gets a card with an ability…. It comes down to taking turns and crossing out stars really. Once it starts rolling, I do like it though… That’s why I really want to play at 3p, cause I think this will solve the issue.
If you play mainly at 2p, I would try before you buy. Or buy anyway because the game is gorgeous 😁.
