🐋🐙 AQUA 🦀🦈 What is your most-played game of 2024 so far?
We've played seven games of Aqua this year, which makes it our most played game so far. While we like it, we have some suggestions to make the first few plays go a little smoother as we struggled a bit with ours.
First tip, in this colorful tile-laying game you lay patterns of different colors of coral, which can turn into habitats or reefs. When you are playing for the first time, take some time beforehand to see how the tiles fit together and what sort of combinations create reefs or habitats. Once you create a habitat, it's mandatory to put a small animal on it and you could be accidentally destroying your reef. This can be a bit frustrating as reefs tend to score you lots of points. We have reached a point where we know what we're doing and it does add a nice bit of depth to the game but during our first two games we made quite a bit of tile selection mistakes because of this and that felt a little frustrating.
Second tip: instead of grabbing a tile, you can grab the snail marker which forces you to go last in the round but as a reward you get to go first the next round. While this is a fun little twist, in two-player games we found it led to more confusion than its worth. So we leave it out, so we can focus on reef buidling.
With two players, it's a really quick tile-laying game that let's you be clever but also doesn't punish you super hard when you just create some lovely underwater Vincent Dutrait collages. We might not like it as much as Calico or Akropolis but we played those only once this year, so there is something pulling us back to this game since we got an advanced copy in January... 🤔
Many thanks to @sidekickgames for giving us this copy!

Happy International Women’s Day! And to celebrate, here’s a comic about a game designed (@ritaonfire ) and illustrated (@annikaheller_illustration ) by women!
In the oceans around the equator, a beautiful habitat shines with bright colors. Coral reefs are underwater ecosystems and are home to many species. However, as a result of global warming, reefs have been declining massively in recent decades and it is up to us to protect them to keep them alive!
In LUMICORA you gather colorful coral tiles and use them to construct new reefs that grow in all directions. You need to stack your coral tiles strategically and also consider the sea creatures that live in the reef. Limestone serves as the foundation of your reef, so it’s important to ensure that you always have enough limestone available. The game lasts for 10 rounds. At the end of each round, you can score points for a single type of coral. Strategize and build your reef to win!
LUMICORA is a fascinating three-dimensional tile-laying game that relies on clever planning and timing. Alternative backs with new challenges increase the replay value even more.
The game will be out in late spring this year.
