Production of a large lampshade at the Swedish glassworks Orrefors in 1939. A circular sheet of glass was placed atop a bowl-shaped mold and heated to achieve the preferred shape. Once cooled, it was decorated using sandblasting, engraving, or grinding. Many amazing fixtures were made using this technique. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ’Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history. The well-known ‘A2’ is probably the most famous garden chair in Sweden, designed by Artur Lindqvist in 1935 and still in production today, although the models have changed somewhat over the years. But it’s a lesser-known fact that the ‘A2’ used to have an upholstered indoor sibling back in the 1930s. The metal frame was identical, but the seat and backrest were upholstered for better comfort. It’s impossible not to see the Bauhaus influences, even though the tubular steel was replaced by flat steel. The indoor chair had different model numbers depending on the choice of upholstery. With leather upholstery, it was known as model BK; the model with artificial leather was simply called B, and a version with textile upholstery was named C. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ’Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history. It’s hardly a secret that the Danish architect Poul Kjærholm (1929-1980) was highly fascinated by the furniture developed by the duo Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) and Lilly Reich (1885-1947) in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Actually, he often strived to refine several of these classic models, and four examples of this can be seen in the collage above. ⠀ From top to bottom: ⬆️ Daybed designed in 1930 vs. the PK80 designed in 1957. ↗️ MR150 table designed in 1929-30 vs. the PK61 designed in 1956. ↘️ ‘Brno chair’ designed in 1929 vs. the PK13 designed in 1974. ⬇️ ‘Tugendhat chair’ designed in 1929-30 vs. the PK20 designed in 1968. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ‘Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history. A wonderful picture taken in the 1950s on behalf of the Danish retailer Bovirke. The centerpiece in this interior is without a doubt the modular wall shelf BO71, designed by Finn Juhl in 1953. Hardly as extraordinary as some of Juhl’s more organic pieces, but still a great piece. And if you look closely in the lower right corner, you’ll spot the JH504 Cowhorn chair by Hans J. Wegner. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ‘Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history. A beautiful example of industrial design transformed into domestic furniture. In the collage above, you can see a comparison between the front seat of a Czech car and the B33 chair by Marcel Breuer. As we all know, the history of the cantilever chair is complex and filled with assumptions. Mart Stam as well as Marcel Breuer both wanted credit for it, but its history didn’t start with either of these two gentlemen. Instead, it’s hardly a secret that the first cantilever chairs were inspired by the seats found in the salon version of the Czech Tatra type 12 car, introduced in 1926. To provide access to the back seat, these seats had a foldable backrest. Otherwise, the similarity is obvious. This makes the whole legal battle over the rights of the cantilever construction quite ridiculous. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ’Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history. The legendary showroom Hantverket, a store run by the Stockholm Crafts Association, opened in 1934 as a reaction to industrial mass production and the industrialization promoted by the growing functionalist movement. We love old furniture sketches! Here’s one remarkable example: a modernistic shell chair drawn by Arne Jacobsen. He was obviously inspired by international designers like the Eameses in the US at the time. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ‘Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history. The 1st class entrance hall of the legendary transatlantic ocean liner Kungsholm, launched in 1928. Kungsholm was indeed the epitome of Swedish Grace, embodying a Swedish neoclassical aesthetic in the years before modernism had its breakthrough in the Nordic countries. Here you can see sculptures by Gustaf Sandberg (‘Europe’ seen from behind and ‘America’) and cast iron reliefs by Näfveqvarn in the railing. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ’Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history. Pictures taken in 1963 at the exhibition ‘Silverne Stakar’ showcasing a large collection of modernist candlesticks by the Swedish silversmith Sigurd Persson, all made from solid silver. Persson was born in the town of Helsingborg in 1914, the son of a silversmith. He began his apprenticeship in his father’s workshop and later studied in Munich, although his studies were interrupted by the Second World War. He was a highly versatile artist, and over his long career, he designed everything from exclusive silver objects and jewelry to glass, tubular steel furniture, coins, and inexpensive plastic housewares, to name a few. Sigurd Persson passed away in 2003 at the age of 88. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ’Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history. Just bought this iconic ASEA pendant lamp with a distinctive hourglass shape and three lamp holders (two E14 upwards and one E27 downwards). A beautiful example of Swedish 1950s modernism. Several versions of this lamp were available, most of them with perforated patterns. This one is the most minimalist version. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ‘Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history. The innovative ‘Triplex’ industrial lamp was developed by the Swedish inventor and entrepreneur Johan Petter Johansson as early as 1919. (Among other things, he’s the man behind the Bahco adjustable wrench and the pipe wrench.) Several models were developed, adapted to suit factories, hospitals, as well as private homes. In the picture, one can see a ‘Triplex’ being used at the Swedish Shipyard Museum in 1959. ✶ 📺 🅈🄾🅄🅃🅄🄱🄴 📺 Check out our 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 channel ‘Scandinavian Design 101’ about Scandinavia and modern design history.
