Our Artwork of the Month for February is by Alake Shilling, a Los Angeles-based painter and sculptor known for her whimsical creatures and landscapes. Alake is the latest participant in our Outburst Project exhibitions of emerging artists. This painting depicts a personified bear and saxophone working together to produce a tune. Sounds are represented by music notes and glittery, wavy lines that stream outward off the canvas. The duo seems to wholeheartedly channel their energy into playing a song, and the saxophone seems to have become exhausted by its effort. In the artist’s view, her character Buggy Bear exudes total confidence and embodies a sense of freedom that she aspires to achieve. Alake Shilling, "Buggy in a Sentimental Saxy Mood," 2023, oil on canvas, cardboard, epoxy, 36 × 48 in., Courtesy of the artist and Jeffrey Deitch Inc., L2023.122.6. Thank you to the Palm Springs Art Museum, Adam Lerner, all the staff, Board of Trustees and the team of donors who have brought the Albert Frey Aluminaire House to Palm Springs!     In the past two weeks I’ve had the incredible honor of speaking at the construction kick-off for the Plaza Theatre, for the opening of the American documentary and animation film festival, at the Palm Springs High School Film academy and now today for the grand celebration of the Aluminaire house…. And I attended the opening of the Art Museums Q_+ program, the first major museum LGBTQ+ program of its kind!   There’s a recurring theme which I can’t emphasize enough.   Palm Springs is truly an arts and culture destination.   Our city of less than 50,000, has four major museums, Desert X, over 70 live music venues, over 100 art galleries and studios, a symphony, opera, close to ten theatre companies, the Palm Springs international Film festival and a dozen other film festivals, Modernism Week, hundreds of pieces of important public art, and the soon to open Plaza Theatre.      I don’t believe there is any greater concentration of arts and culture anywhere.   Today’s celebration of the Aluminaire House brings all of this together.   The Aluminaire House is deeply intertwined with the city’s identity as a hub for Modernist architecture and its unique desert environment.   Its presence in the city highlights Palm Springs’ role as a living museum of Modernist architecture, attracting enthusiasts from around the world.   Beyond its architectural significance, the Aluminaire House – like our City itself - serves as a cultural symbol of innovation and forward-thinking.   Thanks to Jevpic And Chris Menrad for some of the photos.
