We know that many people have trouble with deer browsing plants in their garden, even if they live near the city. The new Deer Proof™ program from our shrub partner @pwcolorchoice aims to identify plants that deer rarely bother for home gardeners. You will see these shrubs in white containers clearly marked with the Deer Proof logo at local garden centers this year. One such plant is Happy Face® Yellow Potentilla, pictured here. Along with its pink, white and orange-flowered companions in the series, these sun-loving shrubs have finely textured foliage and stems that deer typically pass by in favor of something "meatier". Expect Happy Face Yellow to grow 2-3' tall in zones 2-7. This durable shrub prefers moist, well drained soil but will tolerate poor, dry conditions once established.

🌟 New this year! 🌟 Meet three new spring blooming perennials you'll find in garden centers early this spring. After a long winter, you'll be so glad to see these early bloomers. 👈 Swipe left to see: 1- Bouquet Perfect™ 'Blue Ripples' primrose (Primula vulgaris) - This long-blooming primrose blooms throughout the spring with large, bright violet blue and white patterned, double flowers. Standing just 5-8" tall in bloom, it's best planted along the edges of the garden. It grows in zones 4-8 in part shade to full shade and needs moist soil to grow well. 2- Bouquet Perfect™ 'Mandarin' primrose (Primula vulgaris) - The perfect complement to 'Blue Ripples', this primrose grows the same way but blooms with radiant golden yellow, double flowers. 3- 'Peppermint Patty' pigsqueak (Bergenia) - This unique early spring blooming perennial is both deer and rabbit resistant, thriving in partial to full shade and moist, well-drained soil. Its semi-evergreen, serrated leaves will remind you of wavy cabbage leaves and if you rub them between your fingers, you'll see how it got the common name of "pigsqueak". It grows in zones 4-8.

🌷 If spring had a scent, it would be _______. Lilacs, Edgeworthia and fragrant viburnum are obvious, but have you ever caught the sweet scent of Aromance® Mulberry™ nemesia or Blushing Princess® sweet alyssum on a spring breeze? Heavenly! 🌸

When you're out shopping for flowers this spring, you may come across our plant-powered, industrial compostable Eco+ Grande® and Eco+ Quart® pots, proudly manufactured in Minnesota. Production has more than tripled since their 2022 debut, so you're more likely to encounter them. What's an Eco+ pot? A sustainable alternative to single-use plastic pots that are 100% plastic-free. Though they look and feel like plastic, they are made out of PLA (polylactic acid). PLA is made from natural sugars derived from corn grown in the U.S. Starch from the sugars is processed into a biopolymer that looks, acts and performs like plastic but is far easier to biodegrade. Award-winning Eco+ pots are ASTM D6400 certified industrial compostable and can be brought to municipal facilities for composting. These are the same facilities which manage the composting of food waste, yard waste, etc., broken down into usable compost. This is NOT the same as recycling which is used for plastics. Please do not put plastic-free Eco+ pots in your recycling bin - just like you wouldn't put yard waste into it. These pots are made out of plants! Eco+ pots are plantable, should you wish to plant the entire thing - pot and all - in the ground. If you do so, you must first snap out the two large tabs from the sides of the container (which are larger in the 2024 model than in previous years). This removes a good portion of the lower half of the container, which allows the plants' roots to escape fully and root into the ground. Do not leave any portion of the container sticking up above the soil line. As the PLA material breaks down in the soil, the nutrients it contains feed your plants. How quickly does it break down? That varies quite a bit based on the soil temperature, moisture and length of your growing season. Warmer, wetter and longer = faster. Typically, Eco+ containers last at least a full season in the ground. Any pieces that remain can be tilled into the soil the following spring. Breaking up the remainder hastens degradation. Compare that to the hundreds of years that plastic would have remained in your local landfill. Thank you for joining Proven Winners in growing greener!

One of the easiest ways to grow beautiful pots of flowers is by planting Flower Pillows. These pre-assembled, 6” x 4”, flower-filled pillows are perfectly sized to fit your 12”-14” container, hanging basket or window box. To plant, simply water the pillow, then place it in your container, covering it with potting soil, leaving just the base of the plants above the soil line. Water it again after planting to help the soil settle, then sit back and watch it grow. Flower Pillows are comprised of a biodegradable teabag-like sac pre-planted with five annuals in 20+ of our most popular recipes. There’s no need to figure out which plants grow best together and no plastic pots to dispose of afterwards. Flower Pillows are ideal for new gardeners, busy homeowners and anyone who might physically struggle with handling multiple potted plants. This is a limited run product available only in our US online store (link in bio). Flower Pillows are not available in retail garden centers or Canada. They sell out every year, so we encourage you to reserve yours now for spring shipping. They are $34.99 each which includes shipping.

Garden Tip: If you garden in sandy soil, read on! Sandy soils are easier to work in than clay since they are easy to dig in. New plants can establish faster because the roots spread through it easier. But water and nutrients also move through it quickly, so sandy soil tends to be dry with fewer nutrients. Amending with organic matter, mulching and deep watering are all good practices for gardens with sandy soil. 🔍 Head to today's Insta story to catch the link to the full article on how to garden in sandy soil including best practices for amending, watering and fertilizing, or DM us for the link if you miss it. Fortunately, there are many kinds of plants that benefit from the well-drained characteristics of sandy soil. 👈 Swipe left to see ten kinds of plants that will thrive in it. 1/Catmint (Nepeta) - Pictured is 'Cat's Pajamas'. Perennial for full sun landscapes in zones 3-8. 2/Globe amaranth (Gomphrena) - Pictured is Truffula™ Pink. Typically grown as an annual in full sun landscapes and containers.
