Photo and story by
@jessica.juniper : ““Awwww yeah! Show that photo to everyone. Tell ‘em it’s Dallas. Dallas from Dallas. Matter fact, let me pose again for you.”
I met Dallas in downtown Phoenix. Every other weekend, a local church brings an airstream and a shower trailer to a neighborhood with a heavily concentrated homeless population. We hand out clothes, wash & cut hair, give snow cones, and listen to stories. The goal is to live out the love of Jesus by serving and building relationships. As with most ministry situations, it winds up changing lives on both ends. It brings help and hope, but also brings awareness and humility.
I occasionally bring my camera with me, and I happened to have it around my neck when I met Dallas. He asked me to photograph him, print it out, and bring it to him in a couple weeks so he can send it to his mom.
When it comes to street photography, we so often take photos, but we rarely give photos. So I try to remember to circle back to those who’ve stood in front of my camera. Many people on the streets don’t own any photos of themselves, so it holds more meaning than we realize. Photographs can bring life, hope, and a recognition of shared humanity. Shoutout to Dallas for the reminder.” (Presented by
