Go behind the scenes of a film that opens a new chapter in Patek Philippe’s iconic Generations campaign. ‘A Shared Passion’ is inspired by a true story of a father and son. They may have different occupations, different priorities; lead different lives. Yet their shared passion for Patek Philippe watches acts as a bond between them wherever in the world they find themselves - cemented by the values and craftsmanship of a family-owned watch company. #PatekTime

Perpetual calendars have always been prominently featured in Patek Philippe’s collections, offering a wide range of design elements with analog or aperture displays and dial configurations. They are also married with other mechanisms and functions such as chronographs or minute repeaters. The current Patek Philippe collection of perpetual calendar watches include an In-Line Perpetual Calendar with an original display (Ref. 5236), vintage-inspired models such as reference 5320, and the Manufacture’s Ladies’ First Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 7140). #PatekTime

The perpetual calendar is an exceptional complication that indicates in a single timepiece the day of the week, the date and the month while automatically taking into account the number of days in a month, even on leap years. The movement has a mechanical ‘memory’ of four years – or 1,461 days. Despite their numerous types of display, Patek Philippe’s Perpetual Calendar dials always offer exceptional clarity and readability. For the In-Line Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 5236), Patek Philippe presented an innovative, panoramic aperture with the day, date, and month. To assure the largest possible calendar display on a single line with optimized legibility, the developers were asked to design a system with two date discs as a single date disc with 31 numerals would have been too small and less easily legible. #PatekTime

A highly complex mechanism, the perpetual calendar (in French “quantième perpétuel”, or QP) is celebrated in watchmaking. It automatically recognizes the different lengths of months with 30 and 31 days as well as the leap years and requires correction only once every 400 years. As we celebrate the leap year occurring this month, here is a look back at the early milestones in the history of perpetual calendar timepieces. Patek Philippe introduced the first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar in 1925, showing the correct date even in leap years. In 1981 Patek Philippe evolved the mechanism, with reference 3563 QP, to feature the leap-year date indicator on the dial, presented with a red ‘dot’. All timepieces pictured are on display at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. #PatekTime
