Dr Judith Tucker, 1960 - 2023 We are devastated to announce the sudden and untimely loss of Judith Tucker, on Monday.  Judy was a passionate advocate for painting in all its forms, a caring and compassionate educator, a formidable academic, and a loyal friend. She recently took on the role of Chair of Contemporary British Painting, alongside her very active painting practice, and position as Director of Research: Culture and Impact at The University of Leeds. As an artist and academic, her work dealing with landscape, place, and memory, transcended a single aesthetic or scale. She painted the edges, the things that might reward a more focused reading. Recent series of work included the ‘Night Fitties’, showing ‘the play of light and dark and the uncanny transformations of the chalets on the Humberston Fitties that take place after hours as well as notions of vulnerability, precarity, occupation and emptiness’ Judy was a catalysing presence; funny, warm and generous to a fault. Her enthusiasm for painting’s powerful influence to bring people together, was infectious and it was rare to leave a private view with Judy in attendance, without having made a new friend or connection. Judy leaves behind a huge void but innumerable warm memories. We send our heartfelt condolences to her partner and collaborator Harriet Tarlo, her sisters Catherine and Sarah, and each of her many, many friends. @judithtuckerart

In The Garden @geoffhandsstudio @gallery19a Brighton Solo show by Geoff Hands Open: 21 March - 6 April (Mon-Sat, 10-5pm, Wednesdays by appointment) 'Announcing his second solo show at the gallery, Brighton based painter Geoff Hands presents a carefully curated selection from a group of works that started during the first period of lockdown in 2020 and continues to this day. In addition to Sussex landscape and (Welsh) garden paintings that the artist had been developing for several years and the figurative imagery of Old Masters, Hands continues to forefront his interest in colour, mark and the materiality of the paint medium that pushes the landscape content into unapologetic gestural abstraction. The title for the show, In The Garden, is borrowed from Van Morrison's song of the same title in which the notion of the garden becomes a transformative portal into subliminal feeling and emotion. But whether the source is visual or literary there remains a strong belief that the viewer's response is paramount in realizing the full impact of the artwork.
