What a beautiful team day we had. We celebrated all we achieved last year, imagined what we’d be doing in 10 years, ate a delicious shared meal together, slow stitched what @eastquaywatchet means to us all and relished the time of being together as a team for the day. It felt restorative and very special. Thank you beautiful Onion team, you are wonderful beings xxx 📸credit: Glyn Jarrett

A very fun couple of days in Anglesea, some serious play! We’ve been designing a space to imagine a better future. The designs from these workshops will inform a mobile ‘roaming room’ which will hold performances, storytelling and all sorts of ways we can imagine a better world. Thank you to all the brilliant kids (and parents) who shared their imaginations over the last two days. The Public Map Platform is a research project initiated by Cambridge University, where @invisible_studio have been appointed to design a Rural Roaming Room with children from Anglesey and other collaborators including @pearce_plus Lean Structures and Onion Collective. Thanks to @julieupmeyer for some of the pics!

Yesterday we were with @uniofreading Masters in Architecture students and @invisible_studio talking about how to create a Theory of Change, what utopia looks like and and what they care about most in architecture. It was a privilege to be with these bright, intelligent, capable minds. #thefutureisingoodhands #hope #community #positivechange

Super proud to be working with @bristoltrinity using our community mapping tool Understory. Was a great day, and a brilliant turnout! 🙌 Posted @withregram@bristoltrinity On Tuesday, we collaborated with @onion_collective to deliver 'Understory' - an interactive workshop in which participants came together to create a digital map of social connections within the local community 🔗 Organisations involved ranged from those who are known to us to many had not connected to Trinity but are working within the local community. These included statutory services, Grassroots and DIY networks as well as community activists who are working in areas including health, activism, human rights and education. In total, 63 people took part representing 38 organisations. This workshop is part of our wider commitment to working with our local community to create a relevant and responsive cultural offer. What a journey! Thank you Piers • @invisible_studio for being with us on the highs and lows! Xxx Repost: Today: How it ended. Next pics: How it started. Well done my wonderful clients, friends and collaborators @onion_collective . I remember that first meeting in 2014 when I came to be interviewed for the project and knew then that you’d change the world. Over the years, what that means has shifted as we’ve all got older, but for me, it’s been the privilege of a lifetime to be part of this project and I’ve learned so much about what really are the consequences of architecture and how it can be part of the process of change from this group. The @onion_collective have been validated for their extraordinary work @eastquaywatchet and although I know how gruelling and hard this journey has been I sense for the @onion_collective this is only the beginning. It is unlikely they’ll do anything as straightforward as another @eastquaywatchet but their ability to - against the odds - make positive change is breathtaking.

Whoop whoop!!! ・・・ 🏆 The winner of Client of the Year 2023 is Onion Collective CIC (@onion_collective ) for East Quay, by Invisible Studio (@invisible_studio ) and Ellis Williams Architects (@elliswilliamsarchitects ). Presented since 1998, this annual award honours the key role clients play in the creation of great architecture. Comprising a gallery, artists’ studios and education spaces, East Quay is the vision of the social enterprise, Onion Collective. The community-funded project lies on a previously abandoned boatyard in the coastal town of Watchet in North Somerset and has been commended as an uplifting model for community-led regeneration. Judges noted that the completion of East Quay, over an eight-year period, was testament to the concerted efforts of Onion Collective and local people – schools, social clubs, community groups and businesses – who were engaged in its development. The project has also initiated wider regeneration of the harbour town. ➡️ View the winning project at architecture.com/awards, or via the link in bio. 📷 @clickclickjim RIBA Client of the Year is sponsored by @ibstock.official #RIBAawards

Lovely post from architects @invisible_studio : Posted @withregram@invisible_studio More from @eastquaywatchet showing how the building and spaces are used - here for a free public performance that is one of a seemingly never ending series of events and performances curated by @onion_collective and @containsart1 . One of the things we were most interesting in doing was making a quasi urban plaza that all the spaces look into which would take on a life of its own and plays to an idea we’re interested in about the relationship (in architecture) between the fixed or controlled and the much more ad hoc and improvised - or, what is the structure that is put in place that allows other things to happen…
