Check out one of our favorite photos by Donato Lioce @donamour_photography from our #NGPhotographerChallenge ! “I took this photo close to the Maelifell volcano, deep in the Icelandic Highlands. I like to explore beyond the most popular spots, so after a one-hour hike, I reached the location from where I flew my drone and took this shot, where the landscape seemed to be heart-shaped. This shot means a lot to me since I truly love the Icelandic highlands, and I hope they will remain preserved as they are now.” Share your unique perspective of the world with us using #NGPhotographerChallenge and follow along to see more of our favorites through April 18th. 📸

Photos by @juancristobalcobo | El Tablazo, a moorland near the city of Bogotá, Colombia, has a maximum elevation of 3,450 meters (11,320 feet) above sea level. It has a wide variety of species and a climate that changes rapidly between sun and fog. At the summit a system of antennas helps with aerial navigation and environmental monitoring. Venture to iconic places and beyond what you already know with National Geographic. 📍MACHU PICCHU A wonder of the natural world, Machu Picchu continues to reveal clues to the lost civilizations of our past. In 1912, with the support of National Geographic, explorer Hiram Bingham set off to investigate rumors of ancient Inca ruins in Peru and stumbled on one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century: Machu Picchu. 📍MOUNT EVEREST The first American expedition to Mt. Everest, partially funded by National Geographic in 1963, proved to be the most successful Everest mission in a decade, blazing a new trail to the summit along the way. 📍RMS TITANIC In 1985, with the help of technology designed by the National Geographic Society, professor of oceanography Robert Ballard found the remains of the RMS Titanic. The discovery shed new light on this enduring tragedy 73 years after the ship sank four days into its maiden voyage. 🌍 For a limited time, receive a free special edition tote featuring the coordinates of an iconic place when you purchase a new digital subscription. Photo by Jonathan Irish @jonathan_irish | In Hegra, the Tomb of Lihyan Son of Kuza, sometimes called Qasr al-Farid (Lonely Castle), is one of the more iconic and recognizable tombs carved into the rock by the Nabataeans around the first century A.D. The tomb’s size, distance from other tombs, and ornate facade indicate the prominence of its owner. Personally, I found it to be an incredibly beautiful structure that was so fun to photograph in this remote desert near AlUla. | Experience the extraordinary monuments and ancient history in the vast desert of #AlUla .

Photo by @brianskerry | Orcas swim past a rugged landscape in the fjords of the Norwegian Arctic. The orcas follow the migrations of herring into the fjords during the late fall (October and November), a few weeks before the long polar night, when the sun goes away and darkness lasts all day and night. Orcas can often be seen from land or from whale-watching vessels.
