Dudley the Donkey.
.
Here is Dudley, guarding the pier and ready to lead donkey rides on the beach of Cleethorpes. He’s a bit of an old timer but he still gives the best rides around!!
.
Based on the idea of the local “Dudley the donkey” statue, I wanted to recapture him in a different light. As the spirit animal of Cleethorpes! Painted in an alebrije style with colours of a more vintage tone. In honour of Gladys Nuttall and her husband Buster who first brought donkey rides to Cleethorpes beach in the 1940s. To this day donkey rides are a popular attraction on the beach of Cleethorpes.
.
Donkeys were traditionally used for carrying heavy loads of coal throughout the UK. The earliest record of donkeys working on beaches dates back to1780. They were used because of their gentle nature, quiet disposition and were often ridden side saddle.
