So cool!! @takenakacarpentrytoolsmuseum in Kobe is such a unique and impressive compendium of traditional Japanese woodworking from archaic to modern times. Tool-making, detailed joinery displays and videos, architectural applications, wood sourcing and selection, special exhibitions, workshops, and more. A real thoughtfully crafted place and totally worth the trip. Thanks @justin_seow_creations for the recommendation!

Just an obligatory post to cap off one of the most eventful years of my life so far, full of milestones both professionally and personally! Had my first solo exhibition in NYC, participated in a major international museum exhibition, left my old job, taught at my alma mater, participated in numerous artist talks and conversations and events, gained so many amazing new friends and acquaintances and spent meaningful time with old ones. ❤️❤️❤️ Laughed a lot, cried a lot, learned a lot. Here is a photo of me and my dad last May, a proud moment among many proud moments this year. Thank you, 2023, for being so special. 🙇🏻 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

This weekend we took the RISD Furniture sophomores on a field trip to @marshbillingsnps to learn about sustainable forestry, logging, ecology, and life!! (side note: I am in Providence this Fall teaching at @risd1877 with @bowenliustudio ) What a unique opportunity to learn about the deep story behind our materials, how history and environment gets recorded in its structure, and the interconnectivity of living things. Thanks so much to the park staff who are as friendly and welcoming as they are knowledgable! The “Forest Festival” is an annual event free to the public, with plenty of cool workshops and demos. I highly recommend it to everyone!! 🔥

Silly but useful 📦 shopping basket I made over the summer before things got crazy again 😮‍💨 Wish I put in corner splines but the brackets are doing fine. Old moving box (glued & clearcoated), hard maple, aluminum rods, 1/16” plywood bottom (removable).

Exhibition installation shots 📸: @joeinstakramm Just want to say a huge heartfelt thanks to everyone who has come to see my inaugural solo show at @randcompanynyc . I’m kind of at a loss for words at the overwhelming support and engagement by so many people in the past months - friends, family, colleagues, mentors, strangers. Sometimes I think back to a time when a former high school art teacher at @asfaschool , Dan McCurdy, sat our class down before graduation and asked, “is it still art if no one sees it?” Many of us argued, yeah obviously, we do it for ourselves. But he said something like, “What’s the first thing we do as children when we make a drawing? We show it to our parents.” This is just to say that sometimes you tirelessly pour your heart and soul, questions and curiosities, into something for a reason, wondering and hoping that someone is on the receiving end. 🙇🏻 Huge thanks to everyone who helped make this happen and believed in me along the way. I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to share what I love with people that I love and looking forward to more in the future!! If you are in New York, you can still catch #MaterialAutopsy until Aug 11!

There were so many cool things I came across while looking through @randcompanynyc ’s library and archives, but I just wanted to share one striking passage from this Gufram catalogue designed by Franco Mello which reflects on the Italian Radical Design movement of the 1960s-70s. I feel like it might resonate with some of my fellow designers as well..

Next Wednesday, join Rosanne Somerson, President Emerita and Professor of Furniture Design, Rhode Island School of Design, in conversation with designer Joyce Lin on occasion of 'Joyce Lin: Material Autopsy,' on view now @randcompanynyc . One of the pioneering women woodworkers of the American Studio Furniture movement, @rsomerson received her BFA from RISD in 1976. More than forty years later, @jolime followed in her footsteps, earning a double degree from RISD and Brown. In this Zoom conversation, the two designers will discuss the importance of mentorship in the design profession and the lasting impact of RISD traditions, as well as Lin's post-graduate professional career and Somerson's upcoming return to exhibiting her own work. The conversation will be moderated by James Zemaitis (@james_zemaitis ), Director of Museum Relations, R & Company. Wednesday, May 31, 1 PM EST Registration required. To join, click the link in @randcompanynyc ’s bio. —— 1. Installation of 'Material Autopsy.' Photo by @joeinstakramm . 2. Rosanne Somerson. Photo by Jo Sittenfeld. 3. Joyce Lin.
