The vibrant colors in Caro Deschenes’ “Fleur-toupie” meld and fade into one another, elegantly draping and pooling around the canvas. A flesh-like form appears as if illuminated in the center of the composition, simultaneously rising toward the sky and rooting down into the landscape.  "Lengthy Fall" is on view through this Saturday, March 30th.  Caro Deschênes Fleur-topie Oil on canvas 18 x 14 inches #carodeschênes @oftheoak_

The subjects in Haley Josephs' works are constantly changing, engaging in the transformational processes of birth, adolescence, life, death and rebirth. In 'Refuge,' a mother is seen tenderly clutching her infant child atop a windswept hill, embodying a sense of protection and care while the unpredictability of nature swirls around them. A simple yet majestic encounter between the physical and spiritual worlds, this work bears witness to the cyclical and powerful processes of nature by which all life is renewed. To encounter Descehenes' newest works from the series 'Lengthy Fall,'  is to discover them, to wander through images shrouded in obscurity, and to find visions and truths slowly revealed. Deschenes method of painting is evident in their approach, with thin, translucent layers building to reveal what might be a figure, a form from nature, or any array of abstractions dancing alongside one another. As if physical manifestations of the seasons of change, ethereal, rust-hued forms change from bodily to animalistic to abstracted before the eye, with both the groundedness of landscape and the euphoria of departure. “You, darkness, that I come from I love you more than all the fires that fence in the world, for the fire makes a circle of light for everyone and then no one outside learns of you. But the darkness pulls in everything- shapes and fires, animals and myself, how easily it gathers them! - powers and people- and it is possible a great energy is moving near me. I have faith in nights.” – You, Darkness by Rainer Maria Rilke Haley Josephs’ solo exhibition “Out of My Mind” remains on view through Saturday, March 30th. Haley Josephs

Caro Deschênes’ otherworldly depictions of nature play with associations of emotion to colors, lights, and compositions. Influenced by the textures and colors of the Canadian North, these new works conjure the mossy softness of the earth and the shadowy edges of rocky outcroppings. Bridging internal and external worlds, Deschênes investigates the ancient question of mortality itself through detailed abstractions of nature with full color, feeling, and fluidity of movement.  “Lengthy Fall” is on view through Saturday, March 30th. #carodeschenes @oftheoak_

Haley Josephs’ solo exhibition “Out of My Mind” featured in @galeriemagazine as one of ‘8 Must-See Gallery Shows in March.’ Thank you to @plasternyc for the shoutout! “One of the most talented young figurative painters working today, Haley Josephs studied in Rome and Philadelphia before earning an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale in 2014. Creating youthful fantasies that often turn surreal, the Brooklyn-based talent doesn’t shy away from the use of bold imagery or vibrant colors. The paintings for her fourth solo show with the gallery since 2018 delve into a darker realm, where young mothers and nymphs appear to be in limbo, in a domain between life and death, in a sort of purgatory. Rendered with thin, translucent applications of paint, her emotional landscapes capture nude figures in both dreamlike and nightmarish states. Drawn completely from the artist’s wild imagination rather than from sourced imagery, Josephs’s canvases transport us to a sphere where fairies might feel at ease yet one in which most humans would yearn to escape.”

In Haley Josephs’ “Gathering Clouds,” a reclining nude figure is shown perched atop a peak, seemingly untroubled by the mass of clouds converging in the distance. With neither a foreboding ambience or a particularly friendly one, this bout of weather rises over a small setting sun, while the protagonist tucks in with a book, at peace amongst the elements with her canine companion. We’re proud to share that gallery artist Rasmus Myrup has not one, but two exhibitions currently on view in Europe. “Feels,” presented by Museum Sønderjylland, exhibits a selection of emotionally-charged paintings by Myrup alongside kindred works from the Museum’s collection, connecting certain emotions and experiences across time and space, ultimately revealing a shared human experience. And in “Salon de Refusés” on view at 1646 Art Space, Myrup reimagines characters from Nordic folklore within a contemporary context, considering how these mythological beings might dress and act in 2024, again merging the past with the present. Translated from french, Caro Deschênes’ “Arbre Fruitier,” meaning fruit tree, feels precisely representative of its title, with rich colors ripening and shapes blooming throughout the composition. As if looking into a spellbinding mirror, the work appears to constantly shape-shift, objects transforming before they can ever be recognized. In a single moment, the dynamic interaction of forms oscillates between resembling elements of nature and the physicality of the human body. Haley Josephs’ solo exhibition “Out of My Mind” is now on view through March 30th! Thank you to all who came out in support of the opening this past Friday. Characteristic of Josephs’ practice, the environment of each painting sets the stage for the emotional landscape of her subjects. In this new series, Josephs’ signature characters make their way through dense, dark woods in search of enlightenment. @haley.josephs
