Grant Robertson’s farewell speech to the New Zealand Parliament was not just a collection of great stories, jokes, and political history - it captured who he is as a person. Warm, funny, caring, values driven and with a deep commitment to work on behalf of the most vulnerable. He will always be one of the finest politicians I had the privilege of working alongside - but more importantly, one of the finest humans. I was so sad not to be there to farewell him in person, but I know my colleagues will have given Grant the send off he deserves. See you for that beer soon my friend!

Today my friend and old colleague, Grant Robertson, announced his retirement. I have known Grant for the better part of twenty years. In many ways, I credit him with my journey to becoming a Member of Parliament. When I was a list candidate for the Labour Party, it was your ranking on the regional list that determined your success. As the brand new candidate for Wellington Central, Grant was the hot favourite for the top spot. As nominations began, someone stood to put Grant’s name forward. Almost instantly Grant stood up and announced to the room “I don’t wish to be ranked, until Jacinda Ardern is.” That story says so much about who Grant is. He is selfless, thoughtful, incredibly intelligent, fiercely loyal, and to top it off, one of the funniest people I know. As Finance Minister, he has so many achievements - the establishment of the well being framework is just one of them. He was a champion of changing the way we worked for our people and our planet, and through Covid he showed such an intense commitment to making sure people were properly supported throughout. I can’t imagine having worked with anyone better. Thank you Grant, we all owe you a debt of gratitude.

Flash flooding in New York wasn’t going to stop us getting our vote in for the New Zealand election today. It’s the first time since I started voting that I haven’t been involved in the campaign, but popping a ballot in the box felt just as important. You’ll all know where my ticks went (two ticks for Chippy and the Labour team every time) but I wanted to add this point - if you’re a kiwi abroad, please vote. You’ll find all the details you need here: https://vote.nz/overseas/vote-from-overseas/vote-from-overseas/

If you haven’t heard of the Earthshot prize, the team released a video yesterday (featuring Earthshot prize winners and products) which is a fantastic explainer. Rather than just look at my poor screenshots, check it out for yourself! I’ve popped the link in my bio.

Can’t remember the last time I had a birthday that was quite as normal as this one. Tea and toast in bed, work, and dinner with my loves. Feeling very lucky today…and just a little older. ❤️❤️❤️

Mānawatia a Matariki! I have such lovely memories of standing on the waterfront in Te Whanganui-a-Tara as we marked Matariki as a public holiday in Aotearoa for the first time. This year, I’m watching from afar and it feels just as special. Wherever you are, I hope it’s a day for reflection, whanau and kai!

This is your warning that my feed is going to be dominated by a lot of football chat these next few weeks - not because I’m an expert, but because I’m so excited that New Zealand is hosting such a massive event full of amazing teams and athletes from around the world. There are still tickets to some games across New Zealand (Auckland, Dunedin, Wellington and Hamilton) so whether you’re an amateur enthusiast or an expert, this is your reminder to jump online and join in!

When I left parliament there were a few questions I got asked quite often - are your family happy to have you back (mostly 😂) and will you write about your time in office? At first, my answer was no.  I didn’t want to write a book that hauled over the internal politics of the last five years, and then someone convinced me that I didn’t have to. That maybe it might be worth expanding on some of things I talked about in my valedictory instead—like the idea you can be your own kind of leader and still make a difference.  And so that’s what I’m planning to do.   I’ve seen a bit of speculation about me writing, but there’s not too much more to say other than I’m planning on doing it and will be working with a lovely team of publishers (including Penguin in NZ and Australia, Macmillan in the UK and Crown in the United States.)   There’s no set date for when it will be done- the Christchurch call work on violent extremism and terrorism online is keeping me pretty busy- but I hope when it’s done, it’s the kind of book that would have made a difference to my 14 year old self. (📸 Today -finishing up in Wellington after Chch call meetings.)
