Reflecting on iterative, initially super quick analogue models as a process of investigation using materials to hand. Initially cardboard strips, then cable ties, before timber, ply and finally oak lath. There were many more, of course, and also scanned and investigated digitally. Initially NTS, then 1:50/1:5/1:20 and last slide 1:1.

Back up @westonbirtarb today with friends helping prepare for Charley’s funeral tomorrow, part of which is in this building, the Tree Management Centre that we built in 2016, using 22m long Corsican Pines felled in site and hewn by hand by Charley with students as part of a training programme - the biggest timbers used in UK construction I think, and for Charley, the most natural thing in the world. More than anything - he was an extraordinary choreographer of people and processes.

Nice to see this in the AJ today - a project in collaboration with our friends @molearchitects which explores using timber to create a modest and cost effective big span ‘shed’, providing a prototype for other (typically high energy steel framed) industrial buildings. Engineered by @builtengineers . Photos @dnbutlr

My lifelong friend, neighbour and collaborator Charley Brentnall died at 23:23 on 24:2:24. He enabled most of what I’ve done and a good deal of who I am. We taught at the Architectural Association together on the Design & Make Masters, worked on numerous experimental and innovative projects together including the Assembly Workshop, Westonbirt Tree Management Centre, Westonbirt Community Shelter, Colerne School, Dartmoor Arts, Studio in the Woods, Splash Point, Reading Pavilions and more. The most loved person I know. . . #charleybrentnall

Nice to see this little one getting airtime in @dezeen - a collaboration with @pearce_plus at @westonbirtarb . Reflecting on why we do small projects with limited budgets - typically they are to test ideas and carry out research. The technology of this was tested as a student project before being dismantled and tested again for @forestofimagination 2023 housing a dining space for refugees in Bath before on its final developed state evolving into a green woodworking shelter at @westonbirtarb , using their timber in a process that was reciprocally digital and analogue, part cnc’d to locate complex geometries and part hand hewn. Drawings too iterated between analogue and digital. Photos by @dnbutlr except (5) by Joseph Horton
