Our new May issue is out this week. For our annual City Issue we celebrate city style, be that a 1960s tower block in London refreshed by @natalietredgett , laidback New York bohemianism in restaurateur @keithmcnallynyc ’s rented SoHo apartment or the lusciously leafy garden that @lucianogiubbileigardens has created for a west London house. As our gardens come to life again, @clarefostergardens starts her new series on plant combinations, while @olivialanguage details the quest for her own personal Eden, which led to a gardening epiphany. On the cover, @cathkidstonpadgham invites us inside her house in Notting Hill; pretty, personal and appealing, it is filled with art she has collected over the years set against a backdrop of uplifting pattern and colour. Elsewhere, @mhd_martinhulbertdesign transforms the dark and dated interiors of a Georgian townhouse. May is also about turning up the heat. @rambutan_ldn chef @cynthia.uma shares seasonal Sri Lankan recipes with a Tamil flavour while travel editor @artaghanbari recommends the top places to visit, eat and stay in vibrant Athens. You can currently get a trial offer of 3 issues of House & Garden for only £1 with free home delivery and instant access to the digital edition. Taken on as a life-changing project by an antiques dealer and his husband, an unloved 19th-century chateau in the Périgord has been revived with exuberant colour, pattern and texture. Not a huge amount is known about the history of the house, which was built in 1873 and could be described as Renaissance Revival in style. The Germans occupied it during the Second World War and some of the elderly villagers have memories of tanks on the lawn. Nothing of the original interiors survived, although it seems the soldiers had not acquired a taste for the local eau de vie, as there remained a few pre-war bottles in the cellar. After the war, the French state took charge and quickly sold the estate to the family from whom Jim and Andrew would eventually buy it. Take a tour of their revived historic home at the link in our profile. 📸 @boz_gagovski

Decorating experts say yes. If you ever catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and feel startled at the tired face looking back, your lack of sleep might not be entirely to blame – it could be the wall colour’s fault. No really, if circumstances prevent a lie-in or a holiday, a flattering shade of paint can go a long way. At the link in our profile, we asked interior designers and decorating experts to share their favourite flattering paints. Find out which colour was mentioned repeatedly... 📸 @horwoodphoto featuring @farrowandball colour consultant @paddy_od_1_ !!re!!_039;s Worcestershire house 🖊 @aconsideredspace

Food is about sharing. It’s an excuse to get together and indulge. I really do live for food,’ confesses @madamejuanapepa over a bowl of homemade gazpacho. A food writer by trade, Juana was born in the Argentine capital city of Buenos Aires to a family of keen cooks. ‘There wasn’t one moment, or one thing, that spurred my love of cooking. I cooked in my family always. My father, my mum, my grandmother, my siblings, they all cook.’ Indeed, this is an unsurprising fact to learn for anyone who has seen her in the kitchen. There’s a flair and self assurance only possible for someone to whom cooking is second nature. Today, Juana has two cookbooks under her belt, with the arrival of another anticipated for autumn. Interior designer Stella Weatherall (@inter_ior_stellar ) has now been a resident of one of Notting Hill’s most colourful streets for six years. Does she ever get irritated with the influencers who bring pop-up tents and a change of clothes to take pictures outside? “No,” she says, “though I do somewhat regret painting my door pink. I’ve had people come up to take pictures in front of it quite often!” Inside the house, though, Stella has achieved an accomplished blend of English sensibility and a fearless attitude to colour and pattern inspired by Hong Kong. It’s officially the start of spring which means it’s time to sow hardy annuals. Programmed to perform as efficiently as possible, annuals are perfect for impatient gardeners. Our garden editor @clarefostergardens shows us how to grow them from seed. Follow the link in our profile for the best annuals to grow from seed. How to sow hardy annuals: 🌱 Use multipurpose compost that has been sieved 🌱 Sow seeds into modular seed trays, lightly pressing down and then sprinkling a fine layer of milled cork on top 🌱 Water your seeds in with a fine spray watering can to not disturb the compost 🌱 Put a lid over the top to keep moisture in when the seeds are germinating 🎥 @leeyamirza Produced by @ginnyemily

"The joy of a garden is that you can watch it grow over many years and therefore I think it is best to stick to a simple, classical design," says @angelcollinsgardens . "You can then re-energise and experiment with the planting over time, as you become more confident with the landscape you're working in". At the link in our profile, Angel shares the things to consider when you're starting off. 📸@raewarne

Other than a minor battle about the paint colour for the hall – in the end they settled on Farrow & Ball’s ‘Lime White’ – interior designers James Thurstan Waterworth(@thurstandesign ) and Scarlett Supple (@aldridgeandsupple )shared the same vision. ‘We wanted the house to be pared back and calming, with lots of texture and warmth,’ explains James. The rooms unfold in a series of elegant yet earthy tones. In the kitchen, dark green painted units are paired with an island made out of reclaimed wood, which was left over from The Bradley Hare pub renovations, while there are soft blue-grey walls in what is known as the winter sitting room, which form the backdrop to an exposed-brick fireplace. 📷 Martin Morrell 🖊️ Elizabeth Metcalfe

Your first glimpse of Mary Keen’s (@keenkeengardener ) garden in Gloucestershire is through the huge kitchen windows that look out to the courtyard beyond. A checked tablecloth is alive with vases of spring flowers: wallflower-scented Tulipa ‘Ballerina’, blueish-purple Lunaria annua ‘Corfu Blue’ and green-tipped Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’. The table acts as a sort of runway, luring you forward to the luminous scene beyond: exquisite button-trumpeted narcissus and glowing heads of crown imperials held high on lofty stems. A shallow pot planted with clear red Anemone pavonina draws the eye to the centre of this sheltered haven, which is limewashed in a soft Mediterranean yellow, its gravel floor reflecting the light and welcoming self-seeders. @sezane ’s founder @morganesezalory made the most of the cubbyhole-sized office space in her small Paris apartment, which she painted the greenish-blue shade Laque from Farrow and Ball. It was just roomy enough to fit a vintage wood desk—atop of which she keeps a balloon-like Les Composantes table lamp. In the hallway closet, Sézalory stores her collection of leather handbags and paintings waiting to be hung on the walls. 'Basically, we removed everything that had been put in but which was not in keeping with the age of the house and restored original elements,’ explains Jack Laver Brister (aka @tradchap ). This included taking out a tiny en-suite bathroom, which had been squeezed into a cupboard in the main bedroom, and installing a new bathroom at the front of the house. “I rather like the fact that you have this typical 1930s exterior that gives absolutely no clue as to what is inside,” says @katie.glaister , co-founder of interiors studio @kandhdesignltd . “It's different, it's fun, and I find the surprise of it puts people into a pretty great frame of mind when they visit.” Katie bought this detached house, perched on a hill on a pretty Wimbledon street, a decade ago, looking for the space and internal width that a detached house of this period provides, but without any particular attachment to the style of the architecture.“I believe that houses should be entirely personal to their owners," she observes, "and to that end I felt it should be completely unidentifiable in terms of its period.” This devotion to embodying the personality of an owner in an interior–a hallmark of her work with K&H Design–has produced an undoubtedly characterful house, full of her own distinctive humour and energy. The Italian-born, New-York-based Pietro Cicognani of @cicognanikallaarchitect worked with the interior designers Peter Marino and Genevieve Faure to create this magical home in the Hamptons for the heiress Katharine Rayner. The interior of the guesthouse, decorated by Faure, features an inviting combination of blue-stained pine paneling, Scandinavian folk art and furniture, charming stenciling, painted floors, and a veritable menagerie of ceramic and stone animals. It’s easy to see why @pearllowe fell in love with her honey-coloured Georgian house in Somerset: there is a bewitching light around it that falls in different ways depending on the time of year. “That’s the magical thing about the house and what made me fall in love with it,” Pearl says. “You get a really soft orange light that at certain times in the year feels like living in a sunset.” Follow the link in our profile to see the interiors. 📸 @owengale

First gardens, like first homes, can have a dramatic impact on what comes later. Three gardeners, @arnemaynardgardendesign , @clarefostergardens , and @daisygarnett shared memories of the the first gardens they made themselves. Pictured here is Daisy's London garden, of which she says "Ivy, numerous elderflower trees and other hugely overgrown weeds engulfed what had once been a cared for place, but had, over the years, become neglected. To me, back then, it looked great. So many trees. So many leaves. How wild and tangled and enticing, I thought." She set about clearing it a few years later, and created her own sanctuary from the bustling streets of Brixton that surround it. ‘My interiors are never predictable,’. says the Australian interior designer @annaspiro . ‘In this hallway, you walk from the stark white of the office downstairs into this moody stairwell and landing – it’s an interesting journey that surprises you along the way. The woodwork was already painted in a high-gloss black, so we worked with that and painted the walls in ‘Rosewood’ by Porter’s Paints, which I’d used in a previous project. I laid a few rugs on the existing timber floors for comfort. I think it is important to have a mix of scale and a mix of art – keeping things all the same scale in the same colours and the same subject can sometimes feel flat and boring. Here, I have combined Allyson Reynolds’ large-scale Moths with smaller works.’ Follow the link in our profile to tour the house in full. 📸 @timsalisbury

“As I did stuff in chunks, my confidence grew. I realised making mistakes can be a good thing,” explains interior designer Stella Weatherall (@inter_ior_stellar ). In the spare bedroom, which is situated in the basement and gets little natural light, Stella “hastily painted the room blue” which was a “complete disaster.” She needed to adapt her colour palette to England’s more miserable weather and pivot her design direction. “With interiors in the East, the climate and light makes things a little easier. Colours just look better there!” It was only whilst working on a project at @florasoames that she came across the perfect thing: a Phillip Jeffries' ‘Manila Hemp Pomegranate’ grasscloth. “I fell in love with it. As soon as I committed to the grasscloth, everything else came together.” Tour the colourful Notting Hill townhouse in full at the link in our profile. 📸 @boz_gagovski 🖊 @armchair_politics

In her south London garden, the writer @daisygarnett has created a lush and leafy haven full of charm and personal touches - and developed a life-changing love of gardening in the process. The garden, at the back of a 19th-century villa, is designed around a circular lawn, with a leafy framework of trees and shrubs enclosing ever-changing displays of seasonal flowers. It would be difficult to find something in Jack Laver Brister’s (@tradchap ) early-19th-century house in Somerset that has not had a previous life, whether as a family heirloom, sourced online or bought at auction. So what if the silk curtains are sun faded and shredded at the edges, a Chinese export bowl is mended with metal staples, the paint on a chair that once belonged to the actress Fenella Fielding is chipped? ‘I like things that are well worn – and make do and mend is part of my philosophy,’ he says. The antique dealer and his chartered surveyor partner Richard Nares took a hands-on approach when restoring this Georgian townhouse, removing incongruous additions and sourcing exquisite historic pieces to create an inviting home. For the last four decades, Jim Terry and his wife of sixty-five years, Maudie, have been the stewards of this shingled cottage in Maine built by his grandparents, where the century-old walls have absorbed the voices of six generations. Terry’s grandmother specified the stain of the walls herself—a mix of Prussian blue, yellow ochre, linseed oil, and turpentine—and it has remained untouched since. The house is featured in a new book from @vendomepress , 'The Maine House'. Follow the link in our profile to see the full story. 📸@mauramcevoy

When Xa Tollemache (@xatollemache ) came to live at Helmingham Hall (@helminghamhallgardens ) in Suffolk, the home of her husband’s family for 500 years, she knew nothing about gardens. After learning the fundamentals from Helmingham’s head gardener, she became thoroughly involved in the design and planting, and eventually launched her hugely successful career as a garden designer. Here she talks us through some of the aspects of the garden at Helmingham in midsummer, including the rose garden she planned and planted in 1982, and the companion plants that go with them. The main bit of work that the house called for was the new stairs. “They were very rickety and in need of replacement,” says interior designer Stella Weatherall (@inter_ior_stellar ). “It felt like I was doing good for the building rather than ripping something out.” A Crucial Trading runner lies on the stairs, where the walls are painted in Edward Bulmer's Tea Green.
