In 1946, Herman Miller began a decades-long partnership with Charles and Ray Eames, which would produce a bounty of designs that revolutionized the furniture industry. Because of their insistence on quality and Herman Miller’s ability to produce, many of these products have become heirlooms that stand the test of time. Charles once said, “The details are not details. They make the product. It will in the end be these details that give the product its life.” Visit our link in bio to shop these Eames designs—and others—at Herman Miller Vintage.

For the first time, graphic designer Tomoko Miho's work is available to purchase. Miho brought a clear, intelligent sense of design to Herman Miller’s corporate graphics and identity system during her tenure with George Nelson’s office (1960–1964), which included a series of price lists and brochure covers. The cover design has been faithfully recreated as a high-resolution poster on 100 percent cotton paper and is available in three colorways. Shop now at our link in bio.

Carol Catalano studied at Rhode Island School of Design and founded Catalano Design in 1987. In 2001, Herman Miller introduced her molded plywood stool, Capelli. Inspired by the molded plywood work of Charles and Ray Eames, Catalano did her own experimentations with the material. The resulting design won a silver in the prestigious International Furniture Design Competition in 1999—the only American design selected from over 700 entries from around the world. “With Herman Miller’s history with molded plywood, they were a clear first choice for a partner,” Catalano says. “This is where the stool belongs.” See link in bio for more on Catalano and her designs.

Now available for the first time, the Ideas poster is based on a 1978 Ideas magazine cover designed by Linda Powell, an award-winning designer and teacher, and the cofounder of the West Michigan Graphic Design Archives. Using intense colors and a thin, white line, Powell created a design that quickly conveyed the rate of change organizations were experiencing at the time. Shop this poster at our link in bio.

In 1981, Barbara Loveland—award-winning graphic designer, teacher, and cofounder of the West Michigan Graphic Design Archives—designed the Wilkes Modular Sofa Group poster, which we just reintroduced. The poster was part of The Big Book—44 posters of products intended to be mounted as a “book” in showrooms. Loveland used Helvetica Rounded because it created “a marriage of the typography with the imagery, which is what I like to do—make a connection,” says Loveland. Head to the link in our bio to shop the framed poster.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we sat down with Barbara Loveland and Linda Powell, two accomplished graphic designers who helped solidify Herman Miller’s rich design legacy. As members of the company’s first in-house marketing communications team, they enjoyed a good deal of creative freedom and camaraderie. “People trusted us as designers. They didn’t meddle,” says Loveland. “We were all friends and work was fun.” They went on to teach at Ferris State University, and they continue to teach others through the West Michigan Graphic Design Archives, which they co-founded in 2013. For more—including our newly released posters of two of their archival designs—see link in bio.

During his storied career as a graphic designer, John Massey played a key role in establishing Herman Miller’s corporate identity—during a critical period of transformation that saw the company go public after the successful launch of Action Office 2. Massey's bold use of color and playful spirit—coupled with a rigid, Swiss-influenced design system—paid respect to the personality of Herman Miller while codifying it for future communications teams. His Action Office 2 Poster, designed in 1978, is representative of the sharply defined style he’s known for—and is now available to purchase, faithfully reprinted on 100% cotton paper, framed or unframed. Visit our link in bio to shop the poster.
