Day two at Sundhnúkagígaröðin Eruption on Reykjanes Peninsula. I had the chance to visit the area after dark on a photography assignment accompanied by ICE-SAR and the police. Conditions were challenging with strong winds, and I only managed to fly the drone once before we had to evacuate the area due to the increased risk of new fissures opening up without warning. Currently, the eruption is mainly active in two places on the four-kilometer-long fissure and a small vent in the south. The lava flow is now about a quarter of what it was initially. One-third of the original fissure is active. It’s hard to say what happens next, but you can always stay updated on the recent news on RÚV English or the Icelandic Meteorological Office. ⚠️ To use the videos in this post in a commercial player or in broadcasts, please contact [email protected] Big thanks to @hljodkuturinn (@upptekid_studio ) for providing the volcano sounds for me, recorded on location at the last eruption in July with his crazy parabolic microphone 🔊 © Hörður Kristleifsson - @h0rdur

Elephant Rock 🐘🌋✨ • One of the most amazing rock formations I’ve ever photographed. Here’s a collection from the famous Elephant Rock in Iceland. This natural basalt formation looks like a big elephant head with its trunk submerged underwater. Can you see it? 👇🏼❓🐘

The luckiest drone video I’ve ever captured. Back in 2021, I happened to be flying over the Fagradalsfjall crater when part of the crater rim collapsed. That part may look “small,” but it’s actually around the same size as a five-story building. Here is the backstory: The eruption was still active, but the crater at that time was in an alternating phase, where it would fill up with lava and then drain completely every 12 hours. I planned to capture videos and photos of the empty crater before it filled up again. I flew the drone directly above the crater, where it hovered while I was changing the video settings. Then, I started recording and began flying the drone backward. Right at that exact moment, the inner wall collapsed, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing on the controller screen. I tried to stay calm to ensure the video would be as smooth as possible. 12 hours later, I revisited the eruption site, and then the crater had filled up again and already overflowing, looking like a huge soup pot of lava. Swipe for a video of that! 🔊🌋: Eruption sounds in the second video (5th slide) recorded by @hljodkuturinn / @upptekid_studio

A collection from the first three days of the third Sundhnúkagígaröðin eruption that began on March 16th, 2024. It is still erupting as I’m writing this and eruptive activity has been relatively stable since yesterday afternoon 🌋 What started as a 3.5-kilometer-long fissure has now decreased to only a few active craters, and volcanologists don’t know exactly when it will end. It is now the longest eruption in this event so far, which began last December. Swipe for more shots! Which one is your favorite? 📸 If you’re wondering if Iceland is safe to visit, the answer is yes. Air traffic to and from Iceland operates normally, and the eruptions only affect a small part of Iceland. All services in Iceland are operating as usual, and everyone is safe. For updated news on the eruption, check out: - www.en.vedur.is (news section) - v.is/english As always, big thanks to @hljodkuturinn (@upptekid_studio ) for providing real lava sounds, recorded at Litli-Hrútur eruption 2023 and Meradalir eruption 2022 🔊

My first shots of the March 16th, 2024 eruption on Reykjanes Peninsula which started at 8:23 PM this evening 🌋 The fissure is at almost the exact same location as the December 18th eruption last year and February 8th eruption this year. Things can change fast, so make sure to check out RÚV English if you want to stay updated on news. Volcano sounds from @hljodkuturinn (@upptekid_studio ) 🔊 © Hörður Kristleifsson - @h0rdur

One of Iceland’s most geologically interesting mountains that provides a window into the past. Its towering horned peaks are part of a big magma intrusion that occurred over 3 million years ago. In simple terms, what you’re looking at are the remains of an eroded Tertiary central volcano. After millions of years of erosion and weathering, what mainly remains is layered gabbro, an igneous rock extremely resistant to weathering. What we’re looking at now are the roots of a central volcano that was once deep underground, giving us a geological perspective into the past and showing how magma intrudes into the crust. Knowing this geologic history, it’s easily one of my favorite mountains to photograph in Iceland. I’ve driven past it over 60 times, but here are shots from some of the best conditions I’ve had there in a single day. All of those were shot within the same 24-hour period. What a place! 🇮🇸🌋

We’ve now had six eruptions in three years in Iceland. It’s been crazy to experience so many in such a short time, especially the last three happening in December, January, and February. Here is a collection showing shots from all six, as I’ve been lucky to photograph all of them. There are no signs of activity slowing down, and volcanologists say there is a high possibility of the seventh eruption happening in the coming days. It could start with very little warning time, even less than 30 minutes. From the first three being friendly “tourist” eruptions to the last three being serious threats to our infrastructure on Reykjanes Peninsula. What happens next? 🌋 1. Geldingadalir eruption 🗓️: March 19th - September 18th, 2021 ‎ 2. Meradalir eruption 🗓️: August 3rd - 21st, 2022 3. Litli-Hrútur eruption 🗓️: July 10th - August 6th, 2023 4. The first Sundhnúkagígaröðin eruption 🗓️: December 18th - 21st, 2023 5. Grindavík / Hagafell eruption 🗓️: January 14th - January 16th, 2024 6. The second Sundhnúkagígaröðin eruption 🗓️: February 8th - February 9th, 2024

To capture one of my all-time favorite aerial shots, I sent my drone 12,1 kilometers across Iceland’s biggest braided river systems. Here is the backstory: In May 2022, I had the perfect weather conditions to reach a split pattern I had planned to capture for years. This was the first spring season after the Mavic 3 launch, which brought in new possibilities in the drone industry: being able to fly more than 10 kilometers away from the remote and still have enough battery to return home. Something that had never been possible with older drones, where either battery life or signal strength was not good enough. Finally, with the right gear, I was ready for the shot. For the first flight, I sent the drone 12,1 kilometers out to the outwash plain, reaching this surreal pattern. For the second flight, I was able to drive further down to the coast, where I only had to send it around 8 kilometers, allowing more air time above the rivers. In the end, my best shot came from the first flight, which ended up being a total of 24,2 kilometers. Those braided river patterns form on glacial outwash plains (sandar), where multiple glacial rivers merge into each other. The color of the rivers can change depending on the time of the day and the amount of sediments in them. To capture this split of glacial rivers and freshwater rivers, you have to visit the area at the right time, which is usually only a few weeks each year. A true bucket list shot 💧✅ Swipe for more shots! Which one is your favorite? 📸

When you think of Iceland, what pops into your mind? 🇮🇸 For me, it’s fire, ice, and aurora. Flowing lava and ancient volcanoes, massive glaciers and their journey to the ocean, and dancing Northern Lights in the sky illuminating the dark winters. Truly the main three elements of this otherworldy island 🌋🧊🐉 With six eruptions in three years, Iceland is truly the land of fire & ice 🔥

A magical 12:32 AM summer sunset in June in Iceland. A different perspective of Iceland’s most photographed mountain, the famous Mt. Kirkjufell. It’s one of my favorite summer hikes, revealing a unique view over Kirkjufell. And the best thing was that I did it overnight, as we have 24-hour daylight in summer here in Iceland. I started the hike at 6:30 PM and returned to the car 12,5 hours later at 7 AM. What a legendary mission 🔥 Swipe for more shots! Which one is your favorite? 📸

Photos from the third Sundhnúkagígaröðin eruption that started this morning at 06:05 AM. I managed to capture incredible images of the scene at sunrise, but the situation has gotten worse since then. As I’m writing this, lava has hit the water pipe that supplies the entire Reykjanes Peninsula with hot water. I’m currently at home in Keflavík and I can feel the house getting colder. A Civil Defence emergency level has been declared due to a disruption in the supply of hot water in Suðurnes, and things are not looking good. However, the pipe is currently being fixed and restored, and we could have hot water back running in a few days. Let’s hope for the best 🙏🏼 For updated news on the situation, check out RÚV English (v.is/english)
