Can you believe that this gold bust was found in a sewer? This nearly life-size portrait of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius was unearthed by archaeologists in Switzerland in 1939. It had probably been concealed during a time of crisis, such as an invasion by Germanic tribes in the late third century. See the bust and learn about the ancient city in which it was found when you book a reservation at the Getty Villa Museum (link in bio!). 🌟 The Gold Emperor from Aventicum is on view through Jan. 29, 2024. 👤 Bust of Marcus Aurelius, A.D. 161–180, Unknown, Roman. Gold. Site et Musée romains d’Avenches et Musée cantonal d’archéologie et d’histoire, Etat de Vaud

William Blake was a man of many talents: printmaker, poet, painter. Although he was generally unrecognized during his career, his spiritual yet rebellious works have made their mark on British art. From fantastical beasts to Biblical characters to imagery and stories from his own life, it’s easy to find something interesting and familiar in Blake’s work. 📍The long-awaited Blake exhibition is here. Book a free reservation to see the show at the Getty Center now through January 14.

12 Days of Medieval Illuminations. Today, 7 men from the margins. Lots of medieval manuscripts have images that we call "marginalia" because they're in the borders around the text. They usually relate to the main text or image in some way, but sometimes they are also just for fun. We're partial to the guy making a face, how about you? - Did you know Getty's medieval manuscript collection is completely digitized and available for high-res download? Gather round, literally. When you think of a painting, what shape do you have in mind? It probably isn’t a circle, but that’s a more popular format than you think. You ton-don't want to miss this breakdown of an Italian term sure to round out your art vocabulary. Head to the link in our bio to find out more, and circle back with us in the comments if you learned something new. 🖼: The Madonna and Child with a Male Saint, Catherine of Alexandria, and a Donor, about 1496, Michelangelo di Pietro Membrini.
