Don’t you find a big blank page can be intimidating! In the 1990s, on the train to
@sheffhallamuni University, I would look out of the window and capture the passing landscape in small squares. I have continued to use this technique because I have always found that, once the page is divided into smaller squares, it is much easier to get sketching!
In 2020, I used the technique for my painting, “140 Monochrome Studies of Sussex”, which was accepted into the
@royal_institute_watercolours (RI) 208th Exhibition at London’s Mall Galleries and went on to win the
@johnpurcellpaper Prize. In the same year, “Studying Murmurations” won the People Choice Award for the
@derwentartprize . It was such an exciting time! My square studies, Chapters, was also selected for the Society of Women Artists
@swainfo . Chapters is now available as a limited edition print.
Since talking about this technique on social media, people have always asked what I use as a template. Over time, I have hand drawn them, used rulers, used bits from the kids’ toys, and now I am delighted to introduce Sketch Squares. This tool will be a great addition to any studio, from fine artists, students, comic makers or if you’re just having a play :)
