We do a lot of pushing in yoga, but there’s a lack of pulling and horizontal / vertical movements with load. Strength training is crucial to avoid sarcopinia (muscle loss as we age) and improves your metabolic rate 🔥.
My physique drastically changed when I started consistently weight training and unsurprisingly my practice has totally changed because of it 🙃

Heart F U L L 🫶
Took a 1st place medal in all 3 of my classes yesterday at San Fran Champs 🥹 The best day made even better having my son, friends, husband and parents in the crowd bringing the house down for me.
I get asked a lot if I’ll go ‘back to normal’ or if I’ll compete again… and while I thoroughly enjoyed eating a pork chop the size of my head last night 😂 I’m excited to get back to clean food, training, yoga… these things just make me feel good. And YUP I’ll be competing next season and plan on being undeniable up on that stage 🔪

And you know what? It’s all good. Bc finding lifting and competing has totally changed my life - and I’m going to share about that whether my followers ‘like’ it or not…. Your account is your own and posting what brings you joy should come first (in my opinion).
The best piece of advice I was given early on in my teaching career was that you’re not going to be for everyone… but you will be for some.

As a side note - what made any of the medals I received last season, from 4th to 1st, feel so incredible is that I said I was going to do something and I DID it. I had moments where I didn’t think I could. I was afraid or doubted myself…. but didn’t quit. THAT is the most satisfying and affirming part of this… I CAN in fact do really hard shit. And now I just want more of it 😂 GIDDYUP

Confidence 👸🏼
I used to walk in the gym like a deer in headlights 👀 and my biggest fear was someone knowing I had no idea wtf I was doing. We’ve ALL have been there… but like anything confidence comes from DOING. Accepting that there’s a period of time, like anything new, where you’ll learn by doing. When I was training w/ @spark_that_ignites years ago I told her I was afraid of ‘doing it wrong’ and she replied - EVERYONE is doing it wrong 😂 meaning, we’re all just trying to figure it out! That stuck with me… nobody cares what I’m doing. I will still stop, YouTube form or ask my coach form questions. There is always room to grow 🌱
Not having a plan 📚
Doing a bunch of random exercises every now and then. Consistency and execution of a plan is king for progress. Where to start? Thankfully there’s a TON of free resources on the web that can outline a start for you. Better yet, hire a trainer (me 🙋🏼♀️) or coach or jump into a @thegreendoor.life strength training class.
Time ⏰
As a mom of 2 small boys, a firefighter wife that parents solo about 1/2 the month, works and trains 6 days a week - I GET being busy 😵💫😂. But bottom line, my goals are important to me and I prioritize my training. Even if I have to work out at home w/ the set of 3 dumbbells I have - I make it work.
If it matters to you, you’ll find a way.
All this to say… you can do this!

✨Spring vibes. Yesterday roaming through the hills, music on, beautiful weather… it couldn’t have been a more perfect day. Sunshine makes me so HAPPY.
✨Feeling at peace in my body. There were a good chunk of years where I deeply hated my body & was constantly battling to change it. I’m so friggin grateful to be at peace… riding the waves of off season, prep, growth, cuts and just digging the process, digging how strong I feel and indifferent I am about the number reflected on the scale. That’s growth.

Fake news told us to run! Sweat! Do HIIT 7 days a week! And while you’re at it, don’t eat a lot bc you want to be thin or ‘fit’ right?! 👿
Ughhhh.
This in reality puts us into fat STORING mode bc our body is just trying to hang on to the nutrients it DOES have to function.
VERSUS, getting adequate carbs + protein to fuel all your daily activities resulting in BURNING instead of storing fat in between meals bc your body feels safe and fed enough to do so.
Basically the opposite of everything I learned coming up. I don’t think I’m alone it that?! Who would have thought that actually eating more, doing less cardio and prioritizing lifting heavy shit would be the thing to move the needle, balance blood sugar, hormones and cortisol levels 🤯
