Dr Mariel Buqué: thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Dr. Buqué is a brilliant, generous, kind person who also happens to be a psychologist, the author of the fascinating book BREAK THE CYCLE, a sound bath meditation healer, and the spearheader of a fascinating approach to healing that blends ancient, indigenous practices with a modern, scientific approach. The methods she uses to help us resolve intergenerational stress, and both “little t” and “Big T” trauma, is, to my mind, a perfect hybrid of established technique and unconventional thinking. I hope you will listen to this conversation about carrying familial burdens, forgiveness, illness, freedom, guilt, loyalty, and more. And I hope you will also check out BREAK THE CYCLE if you want to learn about the powerful mind-body connection and how to begin healing the unseen wounds from which so many of us suffer. The methods that Dr. Buqué describes in this book embody the perfect mix of clear-eyed science, relatable stories, and my favorite — solutions! What could be better? Thank you for bringing your wisdom, experience, and luminosity to our book club, Mariel. You are extraordinary! #breakthecycle #onwardbookclub

It's almost time for our next installment of the Onward Book Club! This month, I am thrilled to welcome @dr.marielbuque , author of the breakthrough, revolutionary BREAK THE CYCLE, to talk about unseen wounds and what we can do to fix them. One thing I love about Dr. Buqué's approach to issues of generational trauma is that she doesn't only define trauma as a Big T word; she explains that even for those fortunate enough to not experience obvious and major crises, the mindsets we inherit (and even the trauma of past generations) can be carried forward in very real and troublesome emotional and physical symptoms. This book is the perfect mix of clear-eyed science, relatable stories, and my favorite -- solutions! There is SO MUCH here to talk about! And nobody better to talk about it with than the very smart and kind Mariel Buqué. So join us right here, on Instagram live, on Wednesday, March 27th at 7pm ET for a conversation about the powerful mind-body connection and how to begin healing intergenerational stress. I can't wait! And as always, I encourage you to buy your books from our partner bookshop, @elizabethsofakron . The link is in my bio ("Browse Onward Book Club selections"). Let's do this! #breakthecycle #onwardbookclub

Chrissy King, everyone! I LOVED this conversation with @iamchrissyking about her revolutionary new book, THE BODY LIBERATION PROJECT. We talked for an hour but I could listen to this brilliant woman for days. She is here to tell us that there is life after diet culture — an insidious culture deeply rooted in the history of white supremacy. We talked about how we’ve lost the plot on “body positivity,” and how and why we should aim to arrive at something much greater: body liberation. Chrissy reminds us that our bodies are actually the least interesting thing about us, and as she says “We are inherently worthy because we exist.” I am so glad you exist, Chrissy! Your energy and wisdom are beyond. Brava! #bodyliberationproject #onwardbookclub

Just 10 more days until my conversation with @iamchrissyking right here on Instagram live about her revolutionary new book THE BODY LIBERATION PROJECT! I can't wait to talk with Chrissy about standards of beauty and health, and how to undo the harmful messaging we've been fed forever about how our bodies -- and therefore we as humans -- are not good enough, beautiful enough, strong enough . . . Meet us here next Thursday, January 18th, at 7pm ET, and let's learn and unlearn together! #onwardbookclub

New year, same us. We just get to be here, even if we're not new and improved versions of ourselves. We just get to be here. Happy 2024 to you all. I love you!

Here is our next Onward Book Club selection, and the first of 2024! It's a special one, and especially chosen for the timing: we're in the season of "new year, new you" and Chrissy King is here to help us understand our relationships with our appearance, and to help us shed all the harmful messaging we've been fed forever about our bodies. Join me and @iamchrissyking right here on Instagram Live on Thursday, January 18th at 7pm ET for a conversation about her brilliant book THE BODY LIBERATION PROJECT. Chrissy is a writer, speaker, former strength coach, and educator. She has dedicated her career to making the wellness industry inclusive to everyone and to creating spaces where literally every *body* — everybody’s body — is welcomed, affirmed, and celebrated. This book is one of a kind. It’s fascinating, it’s important, it’s funny, it’s written in a conversational style that will have you devouring it. It’s about diet culture and self-worth, it’s about the pervasiveness of Eurocentric standards of beauty, it’s about strength and physical and mental well-being. One of the reviews asks “How can we learn to love and accept our bodies in a society that tells us everything about them is wrong?” Good question! Chrissy King will join us to answer that question, and to guide us beyond “body positivity” to something even more elusive and wonderful — body liberation. I can’t wait! And as always, I encourage you to buy your books from our partner bookshop, Elizabeth’s of Akron. To find it, all you have to do is click on the link in my bio and choose “Browse Onward Book Club Selections.” Onward! #chrissyking #onwardbookclub

Here she is, everyone — Klancy Miller, the force behind the gorgeous new book FOR THE CULTURE: Phenomenal Black Women and Femmes in Food! This book is an extraordinary treat, a loving documentation of the great influence that Black matriarchs have had on American food and drink culture for generations. With essays, 66 interviews, recipes, and the most stunning illustrations you will find in any book anywhere, @klancycooks gives us a long overdue celebration of giants in the field, past and present. We talked about cooking by vibration, the importance of gathering and making food (but only for people you like), the history of Black food spaces as a sacred place to congregate to make cultural and historical change, the critical need to talk about money openly . . . and the brilliant premise of Klancy's first book, COOKING SOLO: The Fun of Cooking For Yourself. Because sometimes you need to make and eat a you-sized cake. Klancy, THANK YOU for nourishing our bodies and minds! I loved talking with you! #onwardbookclub

Hi friends! I have spent all week thinking about the featured guest -- my extraordinary friend Arshay Cooper -- in last week's Letters From Love newsletter on Substack, and I am sharing Arshay's video here because I think you will be as moved by his important reflection as I am. @arshaycooper has accomplished a lot: he is the author of a memoir-turned-documentary called A MOST BEAUTIFUL THING, about being part of the first all-Black high school rowing team in the country, and he has spent much of his adult life ensuring that kids who grew up like he did, in underserved communities, have opportunities to transcend those surroundings. In addition to being an author, a coach, a motivational speaker, an activist (and a trained chef!), Arshay is now building a rowing program in South Africa for youth in apartheid-era settlements. He is unstoppable. But when Arshay joined our project and downloaded a letter to himself from unconditional love, he discovered that he's become too accustomed to expecting too little in return for his work: "Stop giving yourself the leftovers, the broken Hot Wheels, and the little scraps of love you gather after an exhausting day." It's all too rare that we see and hear a man talk so openly about his vulnerability, the pressure to wear masculinity like armor, and how to really take care of himself. This letter will stay with me forever, and I'm so very grateful to Arshay for sharing his heart with us! PS To learn more about Arshay, visit . And to check out my Letters From Love project on Substack, you can always find the link in my bio. Onward!
