🚧 WIP. I’m still trying to discern where this is taking me. Instinctively applying chaotic color while controlling values is intensely challenging. Swipe to see version of WIP that has been fully desaturated in photoshop. I thought it might be nice to check how the values themselves are doing. However, it doesn’t really work: try squinting at both color and BW versions and switch back and forth. Interestingly, certain colors have actually changed value when digitally desaturated. How odd. So, art nerds, digital desaturation is a very poor tool to check your values, fyi. Nothing beats good old fashioned squinting. And squinting is showing me a lot that needs work here. Squinting FTW! 30x36in oil on panel Reference @mar_artmodel X @ellard_vasen

WIP. How it’s going vs➡️How it started. Painting in progress. This is being painted from imagination. I’ve been exploring a new approach to composing still life. Whether as a standalone method or as a way to increase versatility when working from life/observation, I’ve found this exploration to be so beneficial. The freedom of the method is also the challenge. I cannot wait to share this approach (and see what I can learn from fellow artists) in my upcoming workshop with @empireinks this summer (see previous post). My recent practice of abstract painting and frequent separation from reference has led me to this place. It’s just now starting to fall together in a way that is exciting, but also where I often feel out of my depth, which is a great place to be. This current wip is a little respite from a giant portrait I’m working on, the largest portrait I’ve ever painted. I’m not sure where it will lead me, but I’m here for the ride. 🔥🎢

I am so pleased to announce a new painting workshop coming this summer. I’ve never taught a method quite like this before. This will be something unique. For this workshop we will focus on painting still life from imagination! It’s a practice that I find incredibly challenging, exciting, and beneficial. We will stretch our minds and our abilities to the limit. We’ll explore a new frontier and take risks together. I thank you in advance for your trust in this experimental event. Experience level for this workshop is Advanced. Hosted by @empireinks @fineartfirst June 7th - June 10th, 3-day Workshop & optional 4th day to network❤️. Time 11AM - 6PM. Cost is $750. Located at Colt’s private studio in Hortonville, Wisconsin. Medium is oil. For registration, please DM @empireinks

Gofundme link is in my profile. Since August 2018 I’ve spent a good portion of my life here. You probably follow me for the paintings—this gym has been the other half…my other creative discipline. A place for fun, learning, and recreational suffering. Last week someone tried to burn down our beloved jiu jitsu gym @bjj.olympia . Luckily the sprinklers put the fire out but the water damage was extensive. Please help if you can ❤️. Here is a message from our gym manager: “Hi, my name is Shane and this fundraiser is for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu of Olympia. On Sunday February 18th 2024, the unthinkable happened. An arsonist broke into BJJ Olympia, a veteran owned business, and doused floor mats, a US Special Forces flag, and a Thin Blue Line flag, with lighter fluid—and ignited them. The flags and nearby mats were engulfed in flames and quickly destroyed. Fortunately, the sprinklers kicked on, put out the blaze, and saved the building; however, the resulting water and lighter fluid damage ruined 80% of the remaining mats in the gym and damaged the drywall. Nearly 300 members from all walks of life train at this gym. Children. Families. Veterans. First Responders. Law Enforcement. These are good hard-working people and BJJ Olympia is their home away from home. It’s a place they learn to protect themselves and the ones they love, stay healthy, and in some instances deal with trauma they have experienced in other areas of their life. This was an act of aggression targeting families with young children, working professionals, veterans, and law enforcement. The resulting impact, caused tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage, and has temporarily closed the gyms doors. The goal is to rebuild as quickly as possible, but it is expensive. The gym has general liability insurance, however arson isn’t covered, so every expense will be out of pocket. Any donation you can make is GREATLY appreciated—and it will go a long way towards restoring the community.”
