Cheers to 20 years! This year I am celebrating National Nurse Anesthetist’s week for the 20th time. It’s hard to believe I’ve been practicing this profession so long! It all started my Junior year of nursing school when I was doing a rotation in the operating room. There, I met a woman putting in a spinal. I asked her if she was the anesthesiologist, and she said no, I am a Nurse Anesthetist. I knew from that day on that would be my profession. It was a long rigorous road. The total time to get to where I am today was nine years! There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not humbled or learning something new. I still think it is the greatest job ever. There’s been so many memorable moments. I may have a brief interaction with my patients while they are awake, but some of them are unforgettable. I think about them after the fact and wonder how they are doing with their diagnosis. I’ve laughed with some patients and cried with some, but in the end I am honored to have cared for them.
