Hard session this morning! ★★★ Once in a while you need to do workouts where "you go to the well" -> or "Go See God" 😉 as @stevemagness says! Don't do it often. Sessions that challenge you and require your outmost. Sessions that demand your focus and give you a good race-ish battle -> physically and mentally in terms of dealing with the discomfort and your own thoughts. Just as you will be challenged in races. ★★★ We did it this morning with a 20x100 best average, RPE 10/10 session, swim set (p15 second-ish starttime). We did it together as a group, highlighting the mantra that 'we are stronger together"! How can we be stronger together? Through "encouragement", "Support", "praise" and "compassion". ★★★ Further, as an individual what can you do to help and motivate yourself? Self-affirmation / self-talk. -> Those things we say out loud or in our head that help you keep motivated and set your mind up to stay positive and strong in the battle! "X is strong" -> "X can do this"! ★★★ So how did it go? Some succeeded and found a new level - others had a worse than anticipated session. Thats totally OK and part of the game. To reach a higher level you have to be prepared to fail from time to time. As long as you learn and wonder why, so you can set you up for a better session next time! We try again another time, but not too soon as these sessions should not come too often! @aarhus1900triathlon @triatlondanmark

This week's guest on That Triathlon Show is Torben Rokkedahl Lausch (@coachrokke ). Torben is the head coach of the triathlon centre in Aarhus, one of three high-performance centres in Denmark. He is also close to finalising his PhD in Sports Science, and he is the individual coach of age-groupers, short-course athletes, and long-course athletes like Kristian Høgenhaug and Mathias Lyngsø Petersen. In this interview, we discuss Torben's coaching methodology, how he maintains individualisation for each athlete within his squad, the decision-making process of coaching, tips for age-groupers and time-crunched athletes, and lots more. The episode is available now, wherever you get your podcasts (look for "That Triathlon Show") and you can listen to the episode and read the shownotes at scientifictriathlon.com/tts412/ (link in bio). #triathlon #triathlontraining #swimbikerun #endurancesports #endurancetraining #sportsscience #triathloncoach

😉 ————————— Belman A/S @fusion_sportswear @konggaardcycling @rolstedviborg @6d_denmark @bikelab.dk @loberen

Great training day with @aarhus1900triathlon and the regional training center of @triatlondanmark . ★★★ Mixing youth, AG's and elite athletes to do some quality training including: Warm up + open water technique + OW starts. ★★★ After warm up 1x(600 swim into 5k bike), then a break followed by 1x(400 swim into 5k bike). All hard with good transitions 😉 Then lunch and mingling 😎 ★★★ After lunch a warm up bike and then into 1x(1k run - 12k bike - 2k run), then a break followed by 1x(1k run - 6k bike - 2k run). Mix of threshold and VO2max and focus on group-bike dynamics + hard specific bike-run training.

Overview of HRV measurements from @hrv4training and training characteristics for @mathiastri in his preparations for IM South Africa. I use HRV measurements in combination with subjective data from the athlete, to ensure we hit the right training load and that the athlete is able to adapt from and to the training. The picture shows details of the HRV and gives a broad overview of the training focus leading into his 3rd place finish at the IM South Africa, which was one of his best races to date. ★★★ Generally, HRV was stable and trending upwards in january->february which is interpreted as a positive adaptation to the training load. The last phase in february (from the 17th), shows a trend towards a decline in HRV which can be interpreted as a positive sign during a taper, but can also be a sign of overreaching (Further details read further here: /@altini_marco /heart-rate-variability-during-taper-f4891ed5b8ca). ★★★ Due to the trending decrease in HRV in combination with athlete feel and perception, we actually decreased total load and training volume during this period, and took more easy days to ensure we did not overdo it (you would rather underdo it a bit, than overdo it and risk non-functional overreaching/getting into the race in a fatigued state). Thus, the last period was focused on very specific longer sessions of race pace and then in-between primarily easier days. Last week before race week was therefore also "only" 18h of training and race week leading into the race on sunday was approx. 11h (including travel days). ★★★ The "missing" data in HRV from the 28th of february was a combination of Mathias forgetting to do the measurements and also the fact that we would not adjust the training in the last taper phase due to the measurements anyway. HRV can both increase or decrease during a taper and both can be a positive sign during taper, so it is not specifically useful in this short time frame.
