The Spring Solstice in Galahad — my private office at 6-10 Lexington Street — through Sir Brian Clarke’s take on a section of Henry VIII’s stained glass at Hampton Court, complete with THAMES accents.
I know.
I’m working on new collages of a large scale now. Always with the translation of them into stained glass & mosaic at the forefront of my mind. I become somewhat frenzied making these works as the ideas come so thick and fast that the process of actually making them has difficulty keeping up. I think of them as explosions of joy and energy. I am transfixed by the limitless universe they provoke in my mind’s eye and when the stage comes to translate some of them into stained glass I become giddy, intoxicated by the Imagined results. #contemporarayart#papercutouts#papiercollé#brianclarke

The 'Stroud' window which was exhibited from June to January at Newport Street Gallery in London is now being installed in its permanent home, a 16-17th century stone house in Gloucestershire. Based (or inspired) by the ossuaries in southern England and the relentless catacombs in Rome. Relatively modest in size compared to other works in stained glass in architecture that I’ve done, I think this window consumed more time, emotional energy and imagination, than any project I can recall. It began as skulls drawn, then collaged, then painted as watercolours: I made hundreds of studies from a large private collection of human skulls, and my own. The possibilities of how to express the skulls were infinite, but it felt like I had to go through all of them to end up at the final result. There are more than 1,000 skulls in the window. It's a joy to work in a stone building again. We'll post further pictures as soon as we have them. – Brian

Looking through the new ‘G3’ panels, on through to the ‘G1’ stained glass Spitfires, the first edition launched with HENI. I love the way the Spitfires burst through the etched Falcons and bounce off the highly reflective polished steel frame. Always animate, always changing, stained glass is unique.

HENI is thrilled to congratulate Brian Clarke for being awarded a Knighthood in the New Year Honours list. He is the first artist to receive such an award predominantly for stained glass art; a medium which has played such an important role in the development of British art.
Across his fifty-year career, @brian.clarke_ has consistently revolutionized and pushed the boundaries of stained glass. He has been commissioned to design stained glass for buildings across the world by leading architects including @officialnormanfoster , Arata Isozaki and Zaha Hadid and has revitalised interest and respect for stained glass as a medium of equal importance to other art forms.
In light of this news, Clarke’s ‘A Great Light’ exhibition at @damienhirst ’s Newport Street Gallery has been extended until 7 January 2024.
If you haven’t visited the exhibition yet, now is your chance to enjoy Clarke’s spectacular installation which shows how versatile and wide-ranging the medium of stained glass can be.
Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-6pm.

Published by HENI, the hardback monograph features newly commissioned photography – of key works in both Brian’s personal history and development, and in the related development of stained glass as a medium, driven by his pursuit of a public art – and of the installations in the exhibition itself, on view until 31 December.
