DID YOU KNOW ─ The bonnethead shark, a diminutive relative of the hammerhead family, is the only shark known to be omnivorous – eating both animals and plants. In fact, as much as 60% of the bonnethead’s diet can be made up of sea grass with the remainder consisting of crab, snails, shrimp and bony fish. Bonnethead sharks are found along the east coast of USA from New York all the way to Brazil, and along Pacific coast of USA from California to Ecuador. #jawswasntadocumentary #fascinatingsharks #lotstolearn #sharks #sharkconservation #sharkfins #oceanconservation

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION ─ Great to meet ocean artist and conservationist @olivier_leger and discuss different ways of communicating the issues facing the oceans. Oli’s captivating art encourages the viewer to take a deeper look at his images to discover important details and stories around the subject of ocean conservation. In the case of this stunning great white shark, dozens of tiny cues highlight the issues facing the survival of sharks, including the hook, the dollar bill attached to the dorsal fin and the JAWS poster. Thanks to Oli’s support, later this year, Bite-Back supporters will have the chance to win a signed copy of this image.

DID YOU KNOW ─ In an action known as breaching, some of the biggest and most recognisable sharks in the world can launch their entire bodies out of the water. Great whites, basking, threshers and shortfin makos are all known to breach. Of course the great white is famous for its remarkable vertical ambush attacks, but even the enormous, typically languid, basking shark can exhibit a surprising turn of speed and completely exit the water. It’s thought that the basking shark does this to help shift parasites or, perhaps, even to communicate. #savethesharks #protecttheoceans #spreadtheword #sharkconservation #sharks #sharkscience #marineconservation #education

UNDERWATER OIL EXPLORATION ─ Alarmingly, increased demand from the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food supplement industries for liver oil from deep water sharks and rays is pushing more species to the brink of extinction. According to an eight year study just published in Science Magazine, one in seven deep water sharks and rays, including the Greenland shark, are now at greater risk of extinction as the fishing industry chooses to retain bycatch and target deep water species. #savethesharks #protecttheoceans #spreadtheword #sharks #climate #conservation #oceans

DID YOU KNOW ─ Akin to aging a tree by counting the rings on the trunk, scientists can determine the age of a dead shark by counting the growth rings on the vertebrae. As a shark grows it will form a new pair of rings – one opaque and one translucent – on the vertebrae on an annual basis. As a shark becomes mature and stops growing the occurrence of these rings slows or halts. #somuchtolearn #perfectpredators #jawswasntadocumentary #savethesharks #protecttheoceans #spreadtheword

NERVES OF STEEL ─ Huge thanks to our friends at @fourthelementdive who donated a stunning mask and snorkel combo (worth £132) as the first prize in our shark-shaped buzzer challenge at last weekend’s dive show. The fun and frustrating fundraising game was a massive hit with show-goers, all competing for the fastest time. Despite hundreds of challengers, no one could beat Harry’s lightning fast 40.16 seconds lap. Congratulations to Harry and big thank you to everyone who took part in fundraising for our campaigns to #savethesharks #protecttheoceans #spreadtheword

DID YOU KNOW ─ When attacking prey, the great white shark protects its eyes from injury by rolling them backwards into its head. The clever evolutionary adaptation is called ocular rotation. When the eye rolls backwards a section of tough white cartilage take its place. This protection mechanism can save the shark’s eyes from harm, especially from the teeth and claws of seals. #somuchtolearn #perfectpredators #jawswasntadocumentary #savethesharks #protecttheoceans #spreadtheword
