Can you spot the bats in this photo? Swipe to see them! The white fur of the Honduran White bat helps with camouflage! These bats make tents out of these leaves and roost underneath. The sun shinning through the leaf during the day shines the green color of the leaf onto their white fur- making them look green! 📸: @merlintuttlesbats . . . . . . . . #batsofinstagram #bats #forest #treelover #wildlifephotography #savethebats #centralamerica #wildlife #batty #battyforbats #merlintuttle #camo #camouflage

Meet the Honduran White Bat: 🦇 The genus and the species were both scientifically described for the first time in 1892. 🦇 Head and body length of 37–47 mm (1.5–1.9 in) 🦇 Weight: only 5–6 g (0.18–0.21 oz) 🦇 It has distinctive, entirely white fur, which is only found in six of the roughly 1,400 known species of bat. 🦇 It constructs "tents" out of understory plant leaves by strategically cutting the leaf ribs with its teeth; it roosts in these tents during the day. 🦇 It is a specialist frugivore, consuming almost exclusively the fruits of one species of fig. 🦇 Females in a maternity colony will sometimes take care of one another's young when not out foraging. 🦇 They are found in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and western Panama 🦇 Its yellow-orange pigmentation is due to large concentrations of carotenoids, particularly xanthophyll. It is the first mammal known to have enough carotenoids in its skin to generate conspicuous color. 🦇 Due to habitat loss, it is evaluated as near-threatened by the IUCN. 📸: @MerlinTuttlesBats . . . . . . . . . . . . #bats #batsofinstagram #didyouknow #mammal #lovewildlife #animalphoto #wildphoto #landmammals #wildlifephotography #conservation #wildanimals #batlover #savethebats #forest #forestanimals #forestwildlife

Meet the Indiana bat: 🌎 Lives primarily in Southern and Midwestern U.S. states 🦇 It is similar in appearance to the more common little brown bat, but is distinguished by its feet size, toe hair length, pink lips, and a keel on the calcar (spur on ankle area).  📏 The length of the Indiana bat's head to the body is from 4.1 to 4.9 cm. ⚖️ Weighs about 8 g (.25 ounce) 🦟 Indiana bats feed entirely on night flying insects, and a colony of bats can consume MILLIONS of insects each night. 🦇 Indiana bats feed entirely on night flying insects, and a colony of bats can consume millions of insects each night. 🦇 The Indiana bat was listed as endangered in 1967 due to episodes of people disturbing hibernating bats in caves during winter, resulting in the death of large numbers of bats. Indiana bats are vulnerable to disturbance because they hibernate in large numbers in only a few caves (the largest hibernation caves support from 20,000 to 50,000 bats). Other threats that have contributed to the Indiana bat's decline include commercialization of caves, loss of summer habitat, pesticides and other contaminants, and most recently, the disease white-nose syndrome. Large flying foxes roosting in the Philippines. These are essential seed dispersers and pollinators that are in alarming decline, largely due to over hunting for human food. Info and photo: @merlintuttlesbats . . . . . . . . . #fruitbats #batsofinstagram #batlover #savethebats #conservation #saveouranimals #batconservation #merlintuttle #philippines #wildlifefacts

Noack's Roundleaf bat Found throughout tropical Africa. Newly molted individuals are gray, however the fur gradually bleaches to bright orange, likely due to ammonia in roosts. 📸: @MerlinTuttlesBats Info source: ScienceSource . . . . . . . . . . . . #wildafrica #batsofafrica #batsofinstagram #bats #orange #fur #mammal #batscience #batresearch #batbiology #batconservation #science #research #wildliferesearch #batfacts #animalfacts #wildlifephotography

**UPDATE: bats are now considered more closely related to carnivores, ungulates, and cetaceans! So cool! We are always learning, but they are still not rodents. 😉🦇 What other myths have you heard? Background image: @MerlinTuttlesBats . . . . . . . . . . #mythbusting #myth #busted #mythbusters #batmyths #didyouknow #truth #factsnotfear #batfacts #animalfacts #wildlifefacts #notrodents #mammal #mammals #battyforbats #lovebats #savethebats #respectwildlife #flying #flight
