Gretchen Andrew (@gretchenandrew ) is an American artist whose work explores the broader implications technology has on our society. Her most recent ‘Facetune Portraits’ series examines the pervasive influence of image modifications, particularly on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, which are increasingly integrated into smartphone cameras and Zoom settings. These alterations, aimed at enhancing beauty or conforming to algorithmic standards, normalize and homogenize appearances, often referred to as “Instagram Face,” raising questions about the extent to which such edits are voluntary. Gretchen’s studio, through a forthcoming paper in the EVA British Computer Society, demonstrates how adhering to these standards can lead to increased visibility on platforms. She utilizes custom robotics to translate digital image modifications into physical form, creating a juxtaposition between the original unaltered image and the facetuned version. This process, executed through MatrLab’s (@matr.lab ) oil paint printer and custom drawing robot, reveals the tension between personal identity and algorithmic ideals, ultimately resulting in portraits that challenge notions of beauty and the impact of technology on physical appearance. By making the robotic process reproducible and accessible, Gretchen aims to engage audiences with the intersection of art, technology, and societal norms, providing resources for further exploration and education through open-source designs and instructional guides. #art #artist

Pontus Willfors (@pontuswillfors ), originally from Sweden but residing in Los Angeles since 2005, creates sculptural works that challenge conventional assumptions about everyday objects and materials. Through handcrafted transformations, he reinterprets domestic forms like tables and chairs into ornate, lyrical compositions, or reduces them to minimalist constructs, stripping away their utilitarian functions. By bridging the controlled nature of household items with their natural origins or simplifying their culturally charged meanings, Willfors prompts viewers to reconsider the sources of the familiar. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including Dallas, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, Berlin, Rotterdam, and Vancouver, and is featured in public and private collections such as the West Collection and the Beth DeWoody collection, with representation by DENK Gallery (@denk_gallery ). #art #artist

The University of Stuttgart’s ICD Aggregate Pavilion 2018 is a marvel crafted entirely from star-shaped particles poured in place by a large-scale robot, marking a culmination of a decade-long research endeavor by the Institute of Computational Design & Construction (ICD). This pioneering approach allows for reconfigurable and reusable structures, drawing inspiration from natural processes of erosion and accretion. The pavilion’s construction method mirrors the perpetual cycles found in nature, relying on friction rather than adhesion, amalgamation, or coagulation for structural integrity. Utilizing custom-made particles, including inflatable forms and interlocking star-shaped units from recycled plastics, the pavilion showcases the potential of this technology in architecture. With its ethereal appearance and robust construction, the pavilion stands as a testament to the fusion of sustainability and beauty, offering possibilities for temporary structures and disaster relief efforts while exemplifying recycling and material reuse at the forefront of design innovation. #art

Using only crepe paper, wire, and glue, paper sculptor Tina Kraus (@faltmanufaktur ) creates detailed lifelike paper sculpture of wildlife. Kraus draws inspiration from nature’s beauty and diversity, which has captivated her since childhood. However, her concerns about the environment’s future, including the climate crisis and loss of biodiversity, have motivated her recent work. Each sculpture reflects her commitment to realism, achieved through a process of layering crepe paper with intuition and experimentation, starting from initial sketches. Based in Münster, Germany, Kraus continually challenges herself to push the boundaries of lifelike representation in her art.

The sculpture “Horizons” by Neil Dawson, located at Gibbs Farm in North Auckland, New Zealand, is a remarkable piece of art known for its optical illusion of a giant windblown piece of paper gently landing on a hilltop. Created in 1994, it is one of the many monumental sculptures in the farm, which boasts a collection worth $450 million and is known for pushing artistic boundaries. Neil Dawson, a renowned New Zealand sculptor, is celebrated for his large-scale public sculptures that play with illusion and space, often inspired by lines and positive-negative interplay. His works, including “Horizons,” are site-specific and blend seamlessly with their surroundings, appearing whimsical and dramatic. The sculpture, standing at an impressive 15 meters in height and 36 meters in length, seems light and airy despite being made of welded steel. Dawson’s approach to public art emphasizes accessibility and integration with the environment, believing that artworks in public spaces enrich people’s lives and experiences. He critiques traditional gallery settings for their potential to disconnect viewers from reality. “Horizons” embodies Dawson’s vision of art seamlessly integrated into its surroundings, free from the constraints of traditional galleries.

Do Ho Suh (@dohosuhstudio ), a South Korean artist renowned for his immersive installations exploring themes of identity, displacement, and memory, created “Fallen Star” as a poignant reflection on the immigrant experience and the sense of displacement. Inspired by his own experiences of cultural dislocation, Suh’s work often delves into the notions of home and belonging. “Fallen Star,” a part of his ongoing exploration of these themes, is a small house seemingly perched precariously on the edge of a building, evoking a sense of dislocation and instability. The installation challenges perceptions of space and architecture, inviting viewers to contemplate the fragility of one’s sense of home and the ever-shifting nature of identity in an increasingly globalized world. #dohosuh #art #artist

At Coachella Valley’s Desert X in 2019, American artist Sterling Ruby (@sterlingruby ) created a fluorescent orange rectangular prism artwork, titled ‘Specter.’ The work commanded attention under the desert sun. The luminous structure, resembling a bunker, captivated viewers with its intense color, blurring its actual form from a distance. Spanning 55 miles of Southern California’s valley, Desert X transforms a former nuclear test site into a striking exhibition space. ‘Specter’ joined 18 other commissioned artworks addressing ecological, environmental, and social issues of the Anthropocene. #desertx #art #artist

The concept for the artwork originated from a conversation between Chavis Marmol (@chavismarmol ) and Hotel Colima 71’s (@colima.71 ) artistic director, Ana Margarita Ongay. Marmol expressed his desire to combine an Olmec head with a Tesla car and Ongay immediately embraced the idea, leading to the realization of the project. Their first feat was acquiring the car which posed a challenge due to its cost. However, the team was able to find one thanks to a donor’s assistance. Once securing the car and carving the 9-ton stone, the installation process was conducted discreetly to preserve the aura of mystery surrounding the artwork’s arrival, aiming to evoke introspection and initiate conversations about Tesla’s significance and Elon Musk’s influence. Despite the destruction of a valuable asset, Marmol expressed indifference, citing the liberating nature of art to challenge norms and provoke thought. #art #artist
