FINAL CHAPTER
A few have figured it out by now but a lot have not. The coordinates that are printed on the bottom of lid of the box are to Cumberland Hospital in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn.
This is the hospital that Michael Jordan was born in.
Slide 2 is a photo of the hospital. One of my favorite brands growing up as a kid was PNB nation, they always had Easter egg details/info on their garments. I wanted to have a moment like this in the packaging that connected back to the story telling.
The Wings logo - it was important to have this logo incorporated in the design to connect it as the silhouette that pre-dated the Jordan 1’s. Also it was a secret dream of mine to see AWAKE NY in the Wings logo. Big thank you to the Jordan team for allowing us to pull this off on the final product.
Logo Lock inside of tongue label - a small detail like this is what made me fall in love with sneaker collecting. I wanted to make sure that we had the Jumpman/Awake NY logo on the shoe.
Aged Outsole - I wanted there to be a break in the white color on the profile of the shoe. I’ve read all the comments about how much it’s liked and disliked. I think without it, it loses some of its punch.
Paper packaging- this is an old map of Brooklyn, specifically Ft. Greene.
Overall the goal was for the person purchasing these kicks to feel the intention and appreciation that we have to detail. From the butter soft leather to Jumpman medallion.

RESPECT THE ARCHITECT
When ideating about how I wanted to translate the identity/language through typeface only one person came to mind and that was Brent Rollins @brentronic
For those that don’t know Brent Rollins created the identity for Mo’ Better Blues, Boyz N The Hood and Poetic Justice. He was also a founding member of the legendary magazine Ego Trip.
“Where I’m From” - was birthed through the idea of wanting to evoke hometown pride no matter where you are from. I needed the typeface to say that without having to explain it. Thank you Brent for trusting me and the vision for the project.

Stage 1 - Inspiration
Last post I jumped the gun and went right into one of the finishing touches for the Air Ship project. I’m gonna take it a few steps back and get into why I went in the direction that I did.
Admittedly I wasn’t the Air Ship aficionado so I had to go back and do some research. Biggest fact I didn’t know was that the Air Ship predated the 1 and was the first official shoe that MJ wore on court as a Nike athlete. Another fact that I knew wasn’t common knowledge was MJ being born in Brooklyn. Off rip I knew that was the story I wanted to tell. Bring MJ home and bring the Ships home, for that I had to tap into NYC. First time I held the Ships in hand looking at the shoes from overhead, the toe box reminded me of an AF 1. The profile had all the beginnings of a Jordan 1. Collar looked sturdy. Knew that would be a good place to play with material. I started looking at all the Uptown’s that I loved from the past- purple hi w/ white check, Linen’s, all-star weekend, white w/ chocolate swoosh, Bobbito’s w/ gum bottom. The shoe needed some soul. I always loved a double swoosh detail and I’ve been using silver/metallic material since my first collab with ASICS on the Kayano 360. Using silver will always be my way of expressing my love for a silver bullet 97. Phase one done.
