In jamdani the saree can be generally broken down into three sections - the body comprising of butis, or motifs, the end piece, or the pallu, and the borders. In a traditional jamdani saree the border plays a critical role, and most sarees earlier used to have ornate borders. With the passing of time, weaving ornamental borders along the entire length of the saree completely by hand has become an expensive proposition, due to the heavy manual work involved coupled with high level of skill. While we still have the skill, we at Aasmani are finding it increasingly hard to go for elaborate borders due to the increase in overall cost. One could of course reduce the cost substantially by employing jacquard, but we like to stick to the age old tradition of hand weaving without the use of such tools. When it comes to jamdani, one can call us purists.
