Day 86 — 926.2 miles in: The day I learned to outrun lightning. It’s amazing how quickly a bright blue sky can devolve into chaos. One minute I was snapping photos of these beautiful alpine lakes, the next a huge storm dominated the horizon. Thunderheads charged forward like an army of giants, shaking the mountains with their booming stride. I ran toward camp, harried by lightning flashes just behind me. I scrambled into my tent amidst earsplitting thunder, rapidly inflating my mattress in a vane attempt to believe it could insulate me from the tangible electricity snapping through the air—all the while industriously ignoring the two metal poles holding up my shelter. After a few minutes of cowering I regained my courage and shimmied out into the building storm. Inky darkness stained the sky, slashed by thin lines of brilliant plasma darting between the thunderheads. I watched the storm build until my nerve gave out and I fled back to my tent and it’s false sense of security. Earlier, I’d felt exhausted, with my feet and ankles destroyed by the climbing—but no more! I crackled with electric excitement. I played Bach to accompany the thunder, creating a marvelous moment of frenetic energy I channeled into a new work of fiction that’d long been on my mind, ending the day grinning maniacally and enmeshed in thrumming chaos. . . . . #pct #hiker #reflection #reflectionphotography #thruhiking #backpacking #landscapephotography #natural _release #mountainlake #naturephotography #alpinelake #lakephotography #reflection #photography #explore #exploring #alotofmilesandsmiles #nature #travel #theoutpostcalifornia #icelandscape #icelake #bestoftheusa _reflections #wildcalifornia
