Exactly 1 month ago, I successfully defended my PhD thesis! It’s been a few weeks since then and I’ve experienced many emotions and changes during this time. This post is inspired by @theinternationalphd , who also posted about her feelings after graduating from her PhD. Getting a PhD is definitely a huge milestone for anyone, but its not all happiness and unicorns. I felt proud, but also empty and lost at the same time. This isn’t meant to scare people who are excited about finishing their PhDs, but I think its important to show that its not all rainbows and glitter on the other side either. #research #science #scientist #scientistsofinstagram #scicomm #phdlife #PhDstruggles #phdproblems #gradstudentstruggles #gradstudentproblems #gradstudent #gradschool #lab #graduation #thesis #dissertation #thesisdefense #dissertationdefense #phdone
Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m also a first-gen uni student too preparing to defend in the fall. I don’t have a roadmap like so much of my other cohort, so it’s been really helpful to hear about your experience.

Thank you for sharing Denny! I’ve heard a lot of people say similar. I am so proud of you for sharing how you felt/feel. I think there’s an expectation to feel amazing because you’ve finished such a massive thing but in reality it’s also the end of a very “comfortable” chapter with a lot of unknowns ahead. Xx

I can relate to these feelings, but given I am now completing my PhD as a mature age student who remains casually employed within the workforce, it has helped me to remain circumspect and ensure that I am not overly invested in the PhD as an achievement to make or break me. Over 10 years on from the GFC as well, finding ideal (and sustainable) work in the job market is something many of us can only dream of... Likewise, don't put so much pressure on yourself to obtain your dream job (whether it be for position or remuneration) immediately after graduation. Sometimes taking the position which is of most interest to you, helps to support and develop you as a professional is most key to your long-term development and paves the way to your dream position and/or future opportunities.
