"Christmas Truce 1914" illustration, commissioned from @little_verdun . . Available in a high-quality print on the webshop - ww1poster.com (Link in bio 🔗) or find it on my Instagram Shop. Only a few prints left, order before they're gone and in time for Christmas! 🙌 . This powerful illustration is based on numerous similar statues in France, Belgium and the U.K., commemorating the famous 'Christmas Truce' of 1914, which took place on the Western Front. . It depicts a German and a British soldier symbolically shaking each other’s hand in No Man’s Land during the famous ‘Christmas Truce’ of 1914. . In the leadup to Christmas 1914, soldiers began singing Christmas carols in the trenches, with enemy soldiers singing along from across No Man’s Land. On Christmas Eve 1914, this fraternisation culminated with British, French and Belgian soldiers across the Western Front exiting their trenches and meeting with German soldiers in No Man’s Land to celebrate Christmas together. . Here, the soldiers exchanged gifts such as alcohol, food, tobacco, and souvenirs, as well as photographs of their families, and improvised football matches also took place in No Man’s Land. . The 'Christmas Truce' of 1914 is without a doubt one of the most remarkable and beautiful events in the history of warfare; a glimpse of light and humanity in one of history's darkest hours. . #Christmas #xmas #worldwar1 #wwi #ww1 #firstworldwar #worldwar #worldwarone #thegreatwar #history #historical #peace #painting #art #poster #drawing #illustration #1914 #christmastruce #militaryhistory
